The Experience
Charming owners and wild life in the huge parkland including some hens! In 1997, Brigitte and Patrick gave up telecommunications for their dream of the country and the result is this heart-warming, small-village B&B. Avid collectors, they have decorated their roomy 16th-18th-century house with eclectic flair, and old and new rub shoulders merrily; discover an antique scales and weights collection, old armoires and quirky treasures. Harmony breathes from walls and woodwork, your hosts are endlessly thoughtful, food is slow, exotic, organic (and delicious), and families are truly welcome. One of their cottages can also be used as a B&B room and is fully accessible.

We had a 4 night stay with Brigitte and Patrick at Clos de la Garenne and what a great stay we had. The rooms were super, the location very peaceful with the sounds of cuckoo and hoopoes. We had 3 evening meals with Brigitte and Patrick and their other guests and they were all super meals. We had easy access to La Rochelle, Rochefort and Ils de Rea for our visits in the area. We would definitely stay again if we are visiting the area in the future.

A delightful farmhouse in a beautiful rural setting with good amenities and charming friendly hosts Patrick and Brigitte who spoke very good English and enjoyed English humour! We were well catered for and enjoyed evening meals cooked on the premises round a large table with hosts and guests. The 10 acre garden was a delight to walk around and enjoy wonderful sunsets. We would definitely go again if in the area.

A wonderful, characterful place to stay, with a very warm welcome from gracious hosts, a beautiful building and elegant, spacious bedroom, all very well equipped. Delicious breakfasts served in the large dining room and plenty of safe parking. Close to La Rochelle and Ile de Re where we had a very enjoyable day trip. We would strongly recommend this BnB and intend to return.

Location
The neighbourhood
Local points of interest from Brigitte & Patrick François
- Close by : Surgères, our lively local town with its amazing Romanesque church inside le Château, open market, small shops and restaurants, TGV railway station, and its lovely flat countryside around, ideal for biking on paths linking fields and villages.
- West : Gorgeous La Rochelle at 27 km will catch city lovers meanwhile nature lovers will enjoy following the coastline. Châtelaillon-Plage &Fouras, 2 nice beach resorts ideal for families, and why not experimenting a cruise to Ile d'Aix & Fort Boyard ?
- West : Ile de Ré bridge is half an hour driving (as the airport if you come over by plane). This 30 km long flat island is worth a visit with its 10 villages, salt marshes, beaches, fortifications. Biking is THE way to discover it and also its lifestyle.
- South : Rochefort stands on the river Charente upstream the estuary & tiny Ile Madame.. The city used to be the Royal Arsenal where you can still visit the Corderie Royale and the Hermione among other museums including so special Ecole de Médecine Navale !
- East : Discover a hilly landscape where crops, woods and vines altern around charming villages with Romanesque churches and beautiful St Jean d'Angély. Château de Dampierre sur Boutonne & the Donkey sanctuary, or Zoodyssée de Chizé will complete your day.
- North : Marais Poitevin is a huge territory where water and earth have been domesticated by men for centuries. Its famous Green Venice is unique in Europe : walk or bike along the canals or better rent a punt and look at NATURE! Also villages and abbeys...

We only spent 3 nights here on our way south, but would very happily come back for a longer stay. This is a place where you can just switch off and do nothing if that is what you need, but with La Rochelle, Rochefort and the Ile de Re nearby if you need a little more history and culture. A lovely comfortable house beautifully restored. We particularly appreciated the large well furnished guest sitting room and the ability to wander around the grounds. Patrick and Brigitte are perfect hosts. Worth the visit just to indulge in Brigitte's homemade jam! The EV charger real plus. A la prochaine!
