The Experience

The house and cottages sit at the centre of a tiny hamlet and the feel is incredibly private and peaceful. The cottages, set around a courtyard, are light and airy with beautiful colours, mid-century furniture, some abstract artwork – a bit Scandi without being too minimalist. The large open-plan sitting and dining areas are spacious and the kitchens are fully equipped – you’ll also find some vegan treats waiting for you.

Bedrooms (one downstairs with doors to the private terrace) are uncluttered and calm. The upstairs double has its own balcony; all have Emma mattresses, gorgeous linen and blackout curtains. There are spaces for working and record players with vinyl. From the terraces you can take a little path down to the shared pool.

There’s a big communal courtyard for long summer evenings and you can stroll just over half an hour through sunflower fields into the village for a restaurant.

We think you'll love

  • The sunny, sleepy ambiance of the Charente, its vineyards and the swathes of sunflowers in midsummer
  • Walking or cycling into Tusson – a magnet for artists with its pretty stone lanes and towering hollyhocks
  • Finding a quiet spot in the orchard with a book, floating in the pool, allowing your worldly cares to slip away for the moment

Reviews

The young, dynamic owners' welcome is warm and smiley – naturally welcoming with offers of homemade cake and coffee, and plenty of fuss from Betty the dog in her rainbow neckerchief! Everything flows, from their bright smiles, cool style, hip colours and a fresh outlook on the area. Just a lovely place to use as a base for exploring the vineyards and pretty Charente villages.

Nicky, Sawday's Inspector

Cannot recommend highly enough. Our gite was beautiful: well equipped, spotlessly clean, comfortable and stylish. The swimming pool was great: kids loved playing in it, we loved lounging by it. It was really peaceful - you're surrounded by vast sunflower fields - yet interesting towns and cities were easy drives away. Most of all though, we can't praise our hosts Nick and Jen enough. They were welcoming, helpful and generous, and provided us with some of the best breakfasts we've ever eaten. Truly worthy of a 5-star review.

Location

The neighbourhood

Tusson has a good restaurant, pizzeria, deli, cake shop and tearoom as well as various artisan studios. In 15 minutes you can be kayaking down the idyllic river Charente, then enjoying a glass of local wine in the bar. Visit a vegan and organic Cognac house to tour the vineyard then have a tasting. You can swim in the lake and sunbathe at Les Gours, a 15-minute drive, and with ample beach space.

Local points of interest from Jen & Nick Thompson

  • You can walk from the gîte through the vineyards and sunflower fields into the beautiful historic village of Tusson. The walk takes around 35 minutes.
  • You can enjoy incredible homemade cakes and coffee at the very popular cafe, Gateaux, visit the neolithic sites dotted around the village, or visit one of the several artisan makers including stain glass makers, sculptors and potters.
  • You can drive to the incredibly beautiful city of Angoulême in 40 minutes and visit the Comic book museum or do a tour of all the fascinating murals around the city. There are many great places to dine, shop or people watch in a pavement cafe.
  • In 15 minutes you can be kayaking down the idyllic River Charente. There is a great local hire shop that rents kayaks or pedalos and there is no better way to while away a sunny afternoon. After you've finished kayaking you can enjoy a glass of delicious local wine in the bar overlooking the river.
  • Just 10 minutes drive away is a wonderful vegan and organic cognac house, where you can go and tour their vineyard and see how their cognac, pineau and wine is made, before the all important tasting session!
  • If you don't fancy driving to La Rochelle or one of the islands, you can still swim and enjoy sunbathing in one of the many nearby lakes. Les Gours is a 15 minute drive and is very peaceful, has ample beach area for sunbathing, and the water is wonderful for swimming.

Introducing

Jen & Nick Thompson

Young and gifted Jen is a freelance music manager and her husband Nick (you'll see some of his photographs on the walls) runs an art gallery. They sold up in London to move to the sunny Charente and realise their dream of renovating a French property to run as a vegan retreat. Their story was filmed by Channel 4 for 'A New Life in the Sun'. They can organise fridge fills ahead for you.
