The Experience

With its pale cream walls and celadon green shutters, you know you’re getting the authentic Provençal experience at this homely abode. Soak up the colourful interiors, family portraits, fabrics and antiques, then head up to the yellow bedroom where Maupassant stayed (and wrote) in the late 1880s. Inside and out, there are nooks and crannies to escape to and read, or write that novel, in peace.

Six airy bedrooms with shower rooms and garden views mean you can bring the entire gang. The garden is glorious: lovely mature trees, shaded spots to gather for drinks and meals cooked à la plancha. Splash about in the small but sparkling pool in summer.

Spill onto the terrace from the south-facing kitchen, stocked with everything you need and more, or gather round the dining room table while someone tinkles the ivories. You’re midway between Antibes and Juan-les-Pins for beaches, restaurants and that sun-soaked south of France vibe.

Reviews

Maupassant stayed in this house at the end of the 19th-century but it feels as if he could still be there. Tomette tiles cover the floor and there's a piano, hundreds of books, family paintings and a collection of straw hats running up the stairs. It's a peaceful haven with a wonderful garden, yet only a few minutes' walk from the beaches and restaurants of two of the Côte d'Azur's liveliest towns.

Location

The neighbourhood

La Bastide is sandwiched between Antibes old town and Juan-les-Pins in a gated domain. The beach is close and it’s an easy 20-minute walk to the Cap d’Antibes, great for eyeing some of the most luxurious villas on the Cote d’Azur. The Picasso museum is a couple of minutes further, and a ten-minute walk in the opposite direction takes you to Europe's largest port, awash with luxury yachts.

Local points of interest from Sylvie Aussel

  • Find lots of water sports an 8-minute walk from the house: the sailing club, sea kayaking club, paddleboard hire, scuba diving, and sandy beaches on the west and east sides depending on the wind!
  • Walk the Cap d’Antibes, along the coast path or further inland. Climb up via the Chemin du Calvaire to the Garoupe lighthouse and chapel (many ex-votos, model boats and murals), with fantastic 360° views.
  • Antibes: discover the charm of the old town, enjoy walks along the ramparts, visit the Picasso museum, see the yachts at the marina and the Fort Carré which dominates the port.
  • We’re just a 15-minute walk from Antibes train station, meaning you can visit the Côte d'Azur’s towns such as Cannes, Nice, Èze, Villefranche, Monaco etc. and avoid the traffic. Lots of museums to visit.
  • Visit the inland region and all its hilltop villages.
  • There are lots of restaurants nearby which we can recommend. The Provençal market takes place every day of the week apart from Monday.
