The Experience

Escape here to Florence’s peaceful little ‘cabanon’ on a hill among fields and woods and forget the buzz and sophistication of the city. French windows make the single-storey cottage bright, and the living is easy between the bedroom and open-plan living area with its simple kitchen.

You have a little garden to sit out in and a plunge pool for cooling off. You’ll also find shade and birdsong under plane and chestnut trees. Florence leaves you wine and fruit; bring back good things from Aix’s fabulous food market to eat out on the patio. You can stroll along to a seafood restaurant in ten minutes; the Red Pepper restaurant is a bit closer and has music.

Discover Provençale treasures all around but do visit nearby St Maximin Abbey and the Grotte de Maria Magdalena; taste the wine and walk the vineyard trails at Château Lacoste – you eat well there too.

Reviews

Flo is a wonderful hostess who came to find us when we were lost in Aix. Her cottage is quiet and comfortable, set in a garden surrounded by fields so that it feels like the countryside. The plunge pool was lovely because the weather was hot.

We had a wonderful stay at Florence's. She is a lovely, knowledgeable lady and very welcoming. Le Mas des Anges is well positioned to visit places around Provence: ask Florence for her recommendations and won't go wrong. Enjoy!

John, Crawley

We really enjoyed our stay - thank you Florence! If you want peace and quiet & the most charming host, this is the place to go. Florence is very knowledgeable & happy to suggest places to go - both to eat (Roy Rene & the restaurant at the Caumont Museum), and visit (Cucuron). Agree with all the other positive comments.

John, Crawley

We had a lovely week in Florence's cottage in a secluded corner of her beautiful garden. Florence was very kind and welcoming. The house is simply but charmingly furnished with a very good shower-room and all you need to prepare easy meals in the kitchen corner. The terrace and garden area offer plenty more living space and the house is cool at night. Super-quiet even though it is well located for day trips by car. It's a pleasant walk down quiet lanes to the centre of Aix (40 mins) and to the nearby seafood merchant (15 mins) with onsite dining. We had a delightful time!

Julia, Edinburgh

A beautiful space with a graceous spirited hostess. We came for a week with our baby (6 months), and Florence made great efforts to ensure we felt at home and comfortable. The space was ideal to go visit the côte d'azur beaches (which is what we mostly did during the week) and to take a walk into beautiful Aix. We would happily return.

We very much enjoyed our stay in Florence's lovely mas. The attention to detail in the way the place was decorated made it feel like a real home. We absolutely loved spending time in the gorgeous pool area and were delighted to be greeted by some very friendly four-legged inhabitants as well. Florence is always there if you need help (or some figs!), which we appreciated. Do book a stay if you are looking for a calm and relaxing getaway close to the city.

My boyfriend and I stayed with the lovely Florence for a week in July and had the most amazing time. Her property is simply charming, close to town and a real oasis of positivity and good vibes. Florence herself is adorable and goes out of her way to make one feel welcome. We went on holiday and came back with an extra friend - thank you Florence (and lovely cats) for a wonderful and unforgettable stay!

Andra, London

This was just what we wanted: close to Aix (we stayed for a week, without a car, and walked into and back from the city every day) yet off the beaten track (surrounded by trees, very peaceful, beautiful views). Florence could not have been more welcoming or helpful; she and her animals are a delight. It's a lovely retreat in all respects.

Jan & Pete, Bristol

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Le Mas des Anges. The cottage was perfect and Florence made us feel so welcome. The situation so close to Aix-en-Provence and the coast could not have been better and Florence was very kind and helpful. We would love to return!

We had a wonderful week at Le Mas des Anges. Florence was the perfect host and from the moment we arrived we felt at ease and very relaxed. It was a delight to stay there and we intend to return.

A short distance from Aix-en-Provence in acres of woodland and with stunning views, Les Mas des Anges is a lovely rural country house and cottage, restored with considerable artistic flair by owner Florence, who is a wonderfully warm, kind and caring host. We stayed here in June 2019. It was simply superb. Relaxing and totally enjoyable, with every facility one would require. We were sad to leave not only because the place really is so pleasant but also because we both felt that in Florence, we had met someone very special, whom we hope will remain a friend for life. A real Sawday's gem

There are so many positive comments to make abour our stay in Le Mas des Anges that it is difficult to be selective. Florence the owner of the cottage is without doubt the most welcoming hostess of any holiday rental accommodation that we have ever exoerienced. The cottage is comfortable with all modern conveniences. But above all it oozes the personal touch of someone who has a flair for creating all the little touches that make this cottage so French. We believe that not only did we enjoy our six nights in Aix au Provence but hopefully we have a friend for life.

June & Gerard, Downpatrick

We recently had a most enjoyable and relaxing week’s holiday at Le Mas des Anges which is beautifully furnished, very comfortable and ideally situated on the outskirts of Aix en Provence. Florence’s hospitality is first class; we had everything we needed and she made us very welcome and was extremely helpful making suggestions of places to visit. We visited some beautiful villages in the Luberon, enjoyed a boat trip from Cassis to see the calanques, as well as exploring Aix en Provence itself with it’s many fountains and restaurants. All in all a lovely holiday. We would love to return.

Claire, Suffolk

We had a lovely week at Le Mas des Anges. Florence was a wonderful host - she was so kind, friendly and helpful. We arrived at the beautifully furnished and very clean cottage to a welcome of wine, marmalade and jam. The cottage is in the grounds of Florence's large garden but still very private. It is a very peaceful and relaxing environment. The plunge pool was also a special place to enjoy. A lovely place to stay.

Ann & Chris, Harrogate

This is a perfect city retreat for exploring Aix-En-Provence and surrounding areas by day, relaxing in beautiful and quiet surroundings by night. Florence is a wonderful host (along with the dogs and cats). We had the most glorious week. The accommodation is private, extremely comfortable, and the perfect place for a romantic getaway.

Andrew, Nottingham

Florence is a perfect host - welcoming, friendly, hospitable and considerate. She made us feel like family. The Mas des Anges is sublime - furnished and decorated with taste and elegance - well equipped and very comfortable. The setting is great - only 15 minutes from the centre of Aix but feels like deepest rural Provence. The house sits in a wonderful old garden surrounded by gorgeous mature trees and shrubbery. Wild flowers and butterflies abound. We had an all too brief stay - just three days - and spent our days exploring the area and our evenings under the stars.

Tom, Sevenoaks

We had a really nice time staying in Florence's little cottage. Florence was extremely helpful and went out of her way to make sure we had a nice trip. The cottage has been well renovated and has lots of character. It is in the grounds of Florence's house but is private. Visits from the cats and dogs were also very nice to receive! Getting into Aix is around a 30-40 min walk, and is quite convenient. The surrounding areas are very nice to visit and there is beautiful scenery. Overall, highly recommended!

Ben, Brighton

We spent 2 days at the Mas des Anges to visit Aix en Provence. Place full of charm, quiet, in nature and very close to Aix. Warm and friendly welcome. I'll be back.

Location

The neighbourhood

It feels like the country here – with only Florence’s house and her second little apartment in view. Yet a 30-40-minute walk has you in central Aix where Cézanne was born and Zola spent his youth. It’s a bustling, beautiful university city famous too for its markets and galleries, fountains and cafés on the Cours Mirabeau. There are two restaurants, one specializing in seafood, within 10 minutes’ walk. Château Lacoste is a 15-minute drive with vineyard walks and very good food.

Local points of interest from Florence Picolo

  • We also have a 2nd apartment (35m2), w/ kitchenette, lounge & private garden, perfect if you're coming with friends or your teenagers. Ask for pricing and details!
  • I named my house 'Mas des Anges' (House of Angels) without knowing the road name 'Bouenhoure' means road of happiness - so it's paradise!
  • Spend an evening in the vineyards listening to a concert (classical music, jazz).
  • Wander the paths of the magnificent Sainte Victoire mountain which sits above Aix.
  • Visit Provence's beautiful villages, or the coast (30 min away) and its "calanques" where it is all blue, blue and beauty.
  • Note that our 10m2 plunge pool is available for you from 10am till 7pm. Go and visit the superb "bastides" and their gardens.

Introducing

Florence Picolo

Elegant Florence, whose children are grown, lives in the next-door house with her cats and two large dogs. She’s passionate about her animals and the fine trees surrounding her home. She used to be a Parisian and worked for the famous designer David Hicks, then moved south when she had children. Having lived in different parts of France, renovated a number of houses and run an interior design shop in the centre of Aix, she has chosen to settle here and welcome guests to her garden ‘cabanon’.
