The Experience

This 18th-century farmhouse is set in the countryside amid oak forests and fields but is a short drive from shops, bars and restaurants in Venasque or St Didier. Although it’s semi-detached, high trees and hedges give the place a secluded feel. The house is homely and easy for families with plenty of space to spread out both inside and out.

Find four living areas, a wood fire to snuggle by, a cottage in the garden (for an extra two guests), a shaded spot by the swimming pool. Make your own pizzas in the pizza oven (or hire someone to do it for you), fire up the built-in barbecue, sample the local wine –there are six good vineyards within ten minutes’ drive.

You’re well-placed to explore inland Provence – character-filled villages such as St Didier, Venasque and Malemort-du-Comtat are less than ten minutes’ drive; Mont Ventoux for cycling or hiking; Avignon and the Luberon villages are about 40 minutes’ drive away.

Reviews

If you want to explore inland Provence from a base of comfort and character then this is an ideal place. The pool is large and the garden vast with many shady corners to recline and relax. Outdoor living at its best. Beyond, markets, restaurants and vineyards beckon as does nearby Mt Ventoux for those who want a cycling challenge. Outdoor summer concerts, opera and dance are plentiful as are Roman ruins and other historic sites. You'll leave wanting more! Ideal for large families or group of friends.

We celebrated our parent's 80th birthday here as a three generation family trip. Worked perfectly for us all. The separate pool house was ideal for one couple whilst parents and children were in the main house. The property and gardens are large so loads of space for badminton, table tennis, eating al fresco and mostly playing and relaxing around the pool. This area was fab, loads of loungers and parasols. The kids, and adults, loved the heated pool. Quite a rural setting but very peaceful and only a short drive to shops, bakeries, great restaurants and markets. Highly recommend!

We had a wonderful stay in Mas Hautes Garrigues. We were two families, with four children between 5 and 8, and it was the perfect to keep them entertained and occupied even in very hot weather. The pool and gardens are beautiful, and the house is lovely. It has a very well equipped kitchen, and lots of great spots to eat in and sit in depending on the time of day.

Stuart, Sydney

The house and garden are just fabulous. So French, so Provence, beautifully furnished and well-equipped. We wanted for nothing there. We were blessed with near-perfect weather so explored the local area in the mornings (mostly on foot) and relaxed by the pool in the afternoons. Maintained at a steady 29 degrees, the water was perfect. We enjoyed baguettes and croissants from the local St Didier boulangerie for breakfast, and tried two of Simon & Karen's recommended restaurants for dinner. Both of which were amazing. No firm plans yet but we hope to return next year!

Maaike, London

The most magical stay - WOW! Truly the experience of a lifetime. The beauty of the house and garden take your breath away. The interior styling is chic while feeling very homely, with so much space. The perfect place to lounge around and do nothing, play games and activities and host long dinners. St Didier is nearby and great for mooching around, although equally you could never leave this house and be very happy. For any celebration or get together with family or friends, you won’t find a better place.

Location

The neighbourhood

'Venasque is 3km - a medieval hilltop village with a weekly market, cafés. bars. shops and potteries, as well as an impressive church. The views of Mount Ventoux (half an hour away) are spectacular from here. Nearby St Didier is a quaint village with cafés, bars, food shops and restaurants plus a year-round Monday market. It's a 10-minute drive to Carpentras for large supermarkets and an excellent antique/flea market every Sunday.

Local points of interest from Karen Francis

  • The lovely village of Saint Didier is 2km away down a lane flanked with vineyards and orchards. It has all you need -boulangeries, butchers, small supermarkets, restaurants and bars. Not at all touristy, electric bike hire and a lovely market every Monday.
  • On a hilltop 3km away you'll find the stunning Venasque, one of the 'plus beau villages de France' with two lovely restaurants and a bar with panoramic views. Lots of lovely walks start from there.
  • The Guardian listed the Sunday morning flea market in Carpentras as one of the top 10 in the whole of France! Closer to home on a Saturday morning there is a 'vide grenier' under the trees at the tiny Edgar Soumille aerodrome 4 minutes from the house.
  • Mont Ventoux is just 20km away- one of the most 'famous and feared' climbs of the Tour de France. You can drive there via the scenic Gorge de la Nesque, walk one of the trails or hire electric bikes in Bedoin for a more relaxing way to explore the area.
  • Walkers and cyclists will love the Vaucluse area. Half an hour away, the river at Fontaines-de-Vaucluse is turquoise and crystal clear. From there you can hire kayaks to travel down-river to Isle sur la Sorgue (famous for it's antique shops and stalls).
  • The garden is huge so plenty of room for badminton, boules, and table tennis and there are books, games and jigsaws to choose from in the library upstairs - something for everyone.

Introducing

Karen Francis

Simon and Karen live in London. When they decided to buy a property in the Luberon they both found the same one online –and when they went to view it, it felt like home so they put an offer in immediately. House manager Mathieu is on call if needed –his parents owned the house for 20 years and he spent around 10 years living there so knows the house inside out.
