The Experience

Once a silkworm factory, tannery and pottery, now a special self-catering spot to which fresh bread and croissants are delivered each morning. Against a pastoral collage of lavender, thyme, river and canal, discover a constellation of sandy stone gîtes around a sturdy bastide. This is the home of lovely Françoise, who, in high season, serves a weekly table d’hôtes at a lively long table.

It took her a year to convert the gîtes; each is spacious, fresh and uncluttered, naked stone walls contrasting with rich colours. There are open-plan sitting rooms with corner kitchens and coffee machines, terraces, barbecues and snow-white linen. Each has something special: Le Billiard gets three terraces; L’Atelier (over a little stone bridge) is wheelchair-friendly; La Voûte has a vaulted sitting room.

Visit hilltop forts, Roman ruins, taste wines, hunt truffles, return to a pool surrounded by loungers and lawns.

Reviews

We have just had the most wonderful, dreamiest of weeks at La Moutiere. From the moment we arrived we felt at home. We were given such a warm welcome by Françoise that we felt like we were staying in someone’s home but had the privacy and space of a self catering gite so we had the luxuries and space you would get in a private villa. The children loved the goat, rabbits and chickens, badminton, tennis, sand pit, table tennis and of course the pool. The bikes were free for us all to take to explore the area. Fresh bread & croissants were delivered to our door in the morning. Beyond expectations

Laetitia, London

A very friendly and relaxing place with lots to do, such as borrowing bikes, playing volleyball, table tennis or swimming in the pool. Lots of space for children. These are lovely, smart gites with comfortable beds after all that fresh air.

Alison, Sawday's Inspector

This is such a lovely place in the heart of a beautiful region. The rooms were spacious, comfortable and very clean. Bathrooms were also large with lovely smellies from Provence. Breakfast is a feast with home-made yogurts, fruit compotes, jams, delicious cakes (special mention to the lemon drizzle) and of course fresh bread and pastries. Our hostess, Françoise, was a wonderful guest, extremely welcoming. Our children loved the swimming pool, tennis court, table tennis and bikes to borrow. And the two gorgeous and friendly beagles. We absolutely loved our stay and will return next year.

Marie, London

We are regular annual visitors to France and the 2 weeks we have just spent at La Moutiere will rate as one of the best places we have found. We stayed in the L'Atelier gite and it was everything we wanted. Large airy rooms, private outside area with own BBQ, plenty of shade, close to the very good swimming pool, again with shade if required, gite very well maintained and clean. Plenty of good local restaurants and markets. The English speaking resident owner Francoise is everything a discerning guest could ask for with good local knowledge of restaurants & the area. She is an excellent cook!

Location

The neighbourhood

A rare part of the Drôme countryside without hills. You're surrounded by fields of lavender and woods, with a village just up the road. Walking and cycling are superb straight from the door. The O'Rabasse restaurant in Richerenches (a 20-minute walk or 5-minute drive) and Le Clair de la Plume in Grignan are both excellent. Grignan has a famous château and displays of roses in the early summer.

Local points of interest from Françoise Lefebvre

  • There is a 16 x 5 m swimming pool at guests’ disposal on the property, and an old tennis court. There is a playground for children, ping-pong table, swings, badminton area etc.
  • Bicycles are available for adults and children for rides in the surrounding countryside. In the village, there are two tennis courts which can be used at any time by La Moutière guests.
  • Guests will enjoy this region of national heritage, art and culture with its many attractions such as fine castles (in Grignan, Suze la Rousse), its Templar fortress in Richerenches, the picturesque & typical villages (La Garde Adhémar, Séguret)...
  • Discovery of the surrounding countryside, with walks through the riverside Provençal scrubland, and cycling along the numerous small lanes, as well as mountain biking in steeper cross-country patches.
  • We can provide guided trekking itineraries and detailed maps. Come and enjoy diversity of this colourful region, and fall into the Provencal rhythm of life.
