The Experience

Tucked in a verdant valley framed by forested mountains, this atmospheric castle, home to the de Sales family for 500 years, steps right out of a fairy tale. Cross the medieval drawbridge and you’re met with grand turrets and vast impressive rooms filled with family portraits, tapestries, antique furniture and objets d’art.

The setting might be grand but the welcome is relaxed, and you’re looked after in fine style. Table d’hôte dinner (book in advance) is a feast of local and homemade treats – perhaps gratin dauphinois, beef raised on the estate, homemade soups. Breakfast on pastries and breads from the bakery, local honey and jams, sit out on the terrace afterwards.

Bedrooms, named after notable ancestors, are huge and sumptuous with ornate ceilings, polished parquet floors, panelled walls and marble-tiled bathrooms. You can swim in the river on the estate or drive half an hour for a dip in the lake. The sleepy village is a fifteen-minute walk or five-minute drive.

Reviews

This fairy tale castle won us over in an instant: 1000 years of history, breath-taking mountain views, a drawbridge, turreted rooms, medieval halls, and above all the warm and friendly welcome from the attentive staff.
