The Experience

A winding side road snakes down from the sleepy Savoyard village of St-Albans-des-Hurtières to a former watermill with a magnificent panorama. At once welcoming, light and airy, the lovingly renovated interior combines impressive craftsmanship with neat design: note the handmade staircase and the dining room table. Bedrooms are clean and tidy with interesting details, from a restored, original oak bed to handcrafted side tables. The well-equipped kitchen makes cooking a pleasure and the living room is airy yet cosy with a wood-burner; no frills, no chintz, but books, games, WiFi, and traditional Alpine touches. Sarah, the warm and cheerful owner, lives next door, lets you help yourself to veg and herbs that flourish outside. As for the garden, it’s idyllic, with bright flowerbeds, bubbling trout stream and a wisteria–shaded barbecue area decorated with old millstones. The surrounding mountains promise walks, cycling, skiing; by summer the welcoming local community hold festivals, fêtes and markets well worth exploring.

Reviews

Bart, Gent

We stayed for a week in the gite, and it was a pleasure to be there. The house was everything it promised to be. It was comlfortable, clean, well equipped... The wood stove was a wondereful bonus on the cool november nights, the book chest a treasure trove, Sarah's cooking delicious. At night it is completely quiet in the hamlet. There are lots of walks in the area, and you often see Mont Blanc in the distance. It is but a short drive to the butcher, the bakery or the supermarket. Nothing but good marks for Sarah's place!

Tim, Manchester

We had a wonderful week here in the late autumn. The weather and the scenery were superb. We walked every day without ever having to leave the valley. The cottage was delightful and comfortable. We enjoyed the wood-burning stove, foraging for walnuts and exploring this peaceful and beautiful region. Sarah was welcoming and gave us lots of useful information. She had even found out about Halloween activities in the area for our kids. We hope to return

Hayley, London

A fabulous chalet in a beautiful scenic location. We benefited from a delicious meal from Sarah on our first night; 3 wonderful courses cooked with local ingredients, and of course wine! The house was clean, well decorated and well stocked. Its original design was impressive as was the extensive library. The children revelled in the stream at the end of the garden, and despite the cool temperatures, were paddling straightaway. We shall certainly return as a very happy week was spent by all.

Pauline, Dover, Kent

This is a very special place to stay. I loved the kitchen, my husband, such comfort to watch thw world rugby matches in English, and our dog? With all the lovely sniffs and sounds he leaped with joy when out walking. Views over the valley are marvellous, just walk back up the lane and look down. ask Sarah to cook supper, and Sebastian will serve a delightful meal. We have promised ourselves a return visit. If you have a dog, and enjoy his company and loyalty, take him here.

The perfect holiday house: well appointed, supremely comfortable and stunning views out of every window. Our holiday was accompanied by the sound of the mountain stream that rushes through the garden and Le Petit Nid is perfectly placed for exploring accessible Alpine terrain. Sarah is a terrific host who knows just how much space, and care, self-caterers need on holiday.
