The Experience
This moated château is listed as a ‘Monument Historique’ and has medieval roots, with 17th and 18th-century additions, a beautiful dovecote, a tiny 12th-century chapel, a working bakery and three magnificent ‘salons’ which guests are free to relax in – absolutely overflowing with paintings, sculptures, books and antiques, so your curiosity will be unbounded. There is an artist in residence usually – perhaps a musician, or a sculptor, and exhibitions are regular.
Four suites, each with a small anteroom and views over the courtyard and lawns, have extra beds, electric blankets in winter, and sometimes a merry fire. Breakfast is served until 11, so your mornings can be leisurely with fresh pastries from the boulangerie, fruit, yogurt, eggs and good coffee. Packed lunches can be arranged and sometimes there is dinner.
Set off on glorious walks through fields and woods, spotting deer and hares – the Normandy countryside is unspoilt.

We think you'll love
- Having the freedom to take part in whatever is happening in the castle grounds and buildings – in summer a continuous explosion of art and musical events
- That it's a grand pit stop if you're going south, but there's so much going on you may want to stay longer than a night
- Being surrounded by so much grace, in the countryside, the architecture, the artworks
You should know
- Shock horror! There is just one (rather old-fashioned) bathroom shared between the bedrooms. There are extra loos downstairs
- There are no TVs either – you need to step away from stuff like that to fully immerse yourself in these sublime surroundings

Location
The neighbourhood
It's quiet here, at the end of a long avenue – perhaps even as quiet as it's been for centuries. Walks (or cycles) are through gorgeous countryside, but it's not far to the nearest village and about 5km to a restaurant. There's another château to visit nearby in Lassay, and you can kayak or canoe on the Sarthe or Mayenne rivers. The nearest mainline station is Mayenne.
Introducing
Gijs Stork
Gijs and Angelo, charming both, bought the château some years ago and have undertaken a global project to enhance the site's heritage value. They unearthed some archives and these are being researched by locals. They also have a property in Amsterdam, are entrepreneurs and collectors, but most of all lovers of art and music.
