The Experience

This modern barn conversion housed pigs and cows until a few years ago – it’s now a remote base to let go of the daily grind, breathe in lungfuls of country air and enjoy silence, except for the odd cow mooing in the background. While away hours reading in front of the wood-burner. When hunger sets in you can cook up feasts in the well-equipped kitchen.

There’s a rowing boat to take out on the lake (a minute’s walk) or head right in in for a bracing, wild swim. Head out on long walks from the door (there’s heated storage for muddy boots so you’ll never have cold feet) or explore nearby Portumna Forest Park (11 miles) – ask Mary Rose for maps and recommendations.

When it’s shining, the sun streams onto the small patio – crack open the bottle of wine left out for you, watch it disappear and stay to gaze at the starry skies. Wander inside to sink into inviting beds in calming rooms.

Reviews

My family and I had a wonderful stay here. The barn is beautifully done; tasteful, impeccably pristine, and with all conveniences. It’s so peaceful; we loved rowing on the inky lake with its yellow flowers, and the surrounding countryside is a feast for the senses. It doesn’t matter if the weather doesn’t hold: the barn has a gorgeous wood burner, and is designed for cosy days as much as for sunny - we had both! It’s very spacious inside, and we can confirm the outdoor sofa, amidst the carefully cultivated garden, is an ideal spot for relaxing. Mary Rose is an excellent host: we’ll be back!

Clare, Belfast

A comfortable base to get away from it all; you're remote but there's enough to keep you entertained with lovely walks, rowing or wild swimming on the lake and a wood-burner to spend cosy evenings in front of. Mary Rose is a lovely, caring host and goes the extra mile for guests to ensure they have a great stay. Bring the dog and pet the donkeys too!

The neighbourhood

You’ll wind down small single-track lanes past a few other houses, fields and farmland to arrive at the Old Village Barn. Drive 20 minutes to The Snug for French cuisine and tapas nights. Portumna (11 miles) is the closest town – find a castle, supplies and lots of restaurants. Go to Lough Atorick (six miles) for more great hiking and a lovely lake. King John’s Castle and Limerick are an hour away.

Local points of interest from Mary Rose Donnelly

  • Take the rowing boat out for a spin and maybe catch a Pike for supper. Pack a picnic and perhaps if it’s warm bring your togs for a quick dip.
  • Visit the Irish Workhouse Centre in Portumna (11 miles) for a glimpse into local history during the mid 19th Century.
  • Enjoy a pub lunch or a pint with the locals in Walsh’s Bar and Restaurant, Woodford. Afterwards, take the kids to the enchanting walled garden playground.
  • Birr Castle and Science Centre provides something for everyone with award-winning gardens, Ireland’s tallest treehouse and the great telescope.
  • Portumna Forest Park is just 15-20 minutes drive from the Old Village Barn. Wildlife abounds.
  • The vibrant and hip University city of Galway (40 miles) provides great shopping, culture and various dining options. A favorite with all our guests.

Introducing

Mary Rose Donnelly

Warm and welcoming Mary Rose lives down the road with her husband – he runs the beef farm and she is on hand to meet and greet guests. Mary Rose grew up on the farm and has a lot of happy childhood memories – she wants her guests to leave with a similar fondness. You can also meet and feed the two friendly donkeys, Eeyore and Poppy.
