The Experience

A villa perched above Moneglia. Owner Orietta is a mine of information about Ligurian art and history and loves meeting people who share her interest in music; her daughter Francesca is fluent in four languages.

You eat in one of two restaurants: the Michelin starred Orto by Jorg Giubbani, or the traditionally inspired Nasturzio Bistrot. From May to September the Orto crew do outdoor barbecues on Tuesdays. Breakfast is pretty stunning too, and the views are wonderful.

Ask about walks, which range from challenging hikes to picturesque coastal ambles along an old train track, or charter the hotel’s private speedboat with an English-speaking skipper for excursions to nearby coves, islands and towns, including Portofino and the Cinque Terre. The beach is a ten-minute walk.

Reviews

I really enjoyed this visit. I especially appreciated their attention to detail and quality and felt the evolution of a comfortable and well run hotel over 4 generations. This is a well honed and very fine offering indeed in a beautiful location. One can only congratulate such quality in everything they do and propose. Complimenti!

We stayed here for four days. And enjoyed every minute. Friendly hosts, beautiful food, very nice Italian house and garden. Close to the railway station, a short walk to the little city with shops and restaurants, beach and church and hiking paths.

Svanhild, Sætre

I really loved this hotel - the owners and staff were extremely attentive without being obtrusive, rooms were immaculate with great views and quiet (!) Air-conditioningand the half board menu was imaginative and delicious. The hotel is not far from the safe sandy beach down a slightly uneven pathway. The pool is clean and handy at the start and end of hot days. I recommend taking the boat trips to Portofino and the Cinqe Terre villages. The station is easily accessible from the hotel using the rather charming lift.

Let's keep it a secret. A delightful hotel with pool and garden to relax in and owners that care. A 5 mins walk to a town that slowly reveals its qualities - one can imagine this is what the Riviera was like before the masses came. Visit the Cinque Terre and Portofino (trains/boat options) and then feel joy and excitement at returning to this haven. The hotel serves high quality and healthy food in the restaurant at night and on the terrace for breakfast. The town has ample choice of bars and restaurants including places serving Ligurian dishes. We were welcomed everywhere.

Location

The neighbourhood

Set between Genoa and Cinque Terre, Moneglia lies in a bay with a sandy beach and crystal-clear waters. Wander through the narrow streets of the historic centre to discover ancient churches, shops and small restaurants serving local fare, as well as a train station – you can reach the Cinque Terre in 30 minutes, Portofino in less than an hour, and there are authentic coastal towns to explore in both directions. You'll have to walk uphill to get to the hotel from the town although there's a private elevator for the last part.

Local points of interest from Orietta Schiaffino

  • Convivial Wine Tastings & Pesto Demonstration available with professional sommelier Orietta. Organic Vital-breakfasts alfresco, homegrown produce.
  • The town is just a short, picturesque walk away, and a private lift also links the hotel with the railway station (150 m), essential for daily connections to the renowned sights of the Ligurian Riviera.
  • Active: Technogym-equipped fitness room, self-guided hiking program, amazing outdoor pool, running...
  • * Michelin star Restaurant Orto by Jorg Giubbani: since 2019 our renowned Gourmet Restaurant by talented young local chef Jorg Giubbani, a unique and exclusive dining experience in town (closed on Monday and Tuesday))
  • We believe that the freshness of our produce is a choice, and so is bringing seasonal produce partially harvested from our organic garden to the table. When this is not possible, we always give preference to high-quality local or Italian produce.
  • Edi's Table: our tradition-inspired bistrot serves dinners in the garden (closed on Tuesday)
