The Experience
Once you’ve negotiated the steep and windy access drive, you are rewarded with sensational views over Santa Margherita. Roberto, a Ligurian farmer, inherited the house from his grandfather in a dilapidated state; he’s made a few changes! He is a wonderful host and loves this place, deep in the country but within sight of the sea.
Enjoy breakfast or a glass of wine from the terrace and gaze down the coast: a treat. Each bedroom is colourful, spotless, simply furnished and decorated with dried flowers. Bright bedcovers dress grandfather’s beds, muslin curtains flutter at windows, old framed prints hang on the walls and many shower rooms are tiny.
A small shed has been converted into a useful kitchen so you can rustle up snacks. Apart from the hoot of the train and the faint hum of the traffic below, the only sound to break the peace is birdsong. Forget the hire car: paths lead to most of the villages and there are buses from the gate.

A beautiful, peaceful agriturismo. We loved looking out over the olive terraces from our private terrace. The pool was excellent with similar views. Lovely breakfasts with charming staff. The owner, Roberto, was very helpful. People should be aware of the many steps and changes of level, natural for the site. Also, the steep winding access road is better for the smaller car or the brave driver - leave the Porsche at home! What would have made our stay absolutely perfect would have been simple suppers available to buy on the beautiful terrace - even just at the weekends! We loved the 2 donkeys.

We stayed with Roberto for 3 nights on our way to Tuscany. Fantastic views, a great base to explore the Portofino Peninsula. We personally preferred the less touristy towns like Camogli and Santa Margherita to Portofino - though it does look stunning from the ferry when it docks. Stay on the ferry to San Fruttuoso instead. And watch the sun set with stunning views over Camogli and Genoa beyond, over fabulous aperitvos at Bar Da Nicco in Ruta di Camogli.

Introducing
Roberto Gnocchi
You’ll be warmly greeted by Roberto when you arrive and the welcome will stay with you throughout. He and his brood have called this hillside treasure home for over 25 years and it’s been in his family for generations. The pride he feels for the property and the area is infectious. Ask for expert local knowledge and the insider scoop on how to make the best of your Italian riviera adventures.
Ideally located for exploring the Cinque Terre, Portofino, day trips to Genoa, and the surrounding area. I loved it! Perfect for arriving by and getting everywhere on public transport, as clearly explained by ebullient host Roberto. Away from the coastal bustle, this quiet oasis is serene and carefully conceived. Peaceful and semi-private corners of the gorgeously created terraced gardens provide respite from heat and touristing, refreshed by pool dips with stunning views over the wilderness of the national park. Scent of jasmine, sounds of frogs, pheasant, swallows and swifts. Heaven.
