The Experience

Green lawns reach to the water’s edge: lounge here, drinking in the views, and drop down the ladder to the sparkling water, said to be the purest in Italy. There’s also a small beach 100 yards away. The hotel stands, a feast of colour and design, against the steep, wooded foothills of Monte Baldo. It’s a small, restful, civilised place with that light 1920s charm. Bedrooms, some with balconies or terraces, have antiques, exquisite floor tiles, muslin billowing at French windows and Edwardian-style bathrooms.

Breakfasts include home-baked breads and cake, the restaurant prides itself on their homemade pasta and traditional Italian dishes with a modern twist.
Book a treatment in the spa, enjoy a wine tasting, visit the small shop selling their own olive oil, limoncello and jams. Hop on a boat, stroll the many walking trails, hire bikes or simply laze with a book seeking inspiration from the ever-changing light on the water.

Reviews

What a delightful place - the food is delicious, generous and memorable (best porcini risotto ever!) Being on the lake with a beach (and beach bar) just a short walk away all add to the experience. Take the ferry to the top of the lake (it was a highlight of the trip) along with a visit to Andrea's limonaia...Giorgio, Andrea and Francesca couldn't have done more to make the stay any better - thank you all.

You will be spoilt rotten here. Enjoy a relaxing spa treatment. Swim in the lake or relax in the stunning gardens. It's a very chilled out way of life. Have a romantic dinner with great food and wine before sleeping in a dream bed. Don't forget to go on the guided Lemon Grove tour and of course buy some Limoncello to take home as a reminder of a fabulous stay at Hotel Gardenia al Lago.

Jane, Sawday's Inspector

We spent a week in this charming hotel, having spent a few days at their sister hotel, the Hotel du Lac, in 2017. The atmosphere, attentive service, food and position on the lake are all delightful in both hotels. The staff are particularly welcoming and helpful, we loved the weekly wine tasting and the guided walk is an exceptional highlight. We missed it on our second visit and were absolutely delighted to be offered a personal tour of the family's lemon grove instead.

Clare, London

A truly delightful and charming hotel. We travelled as a group of four friends and we cannot recommend this hotel highly enough - the rooms, the food, the ambiance, the family and the staff were all outstanding. Hotel service at its best !!

Location

The neighbourhood

Gargnano is a quiet little town with a bank, post office, independent shops and a harbour where you'll find bars and cafés. The beach is a five-minute walk from the hotel and here you can sun yourself on a bed with a brolly – there’s a special agreement for hotel guests - hire a kayak or paddle board, have a light lunch, an aperitivo or after-dinner cocktail. Ferries to other lakeside towns are regular, including bustling Salò.

Local points of interest from Giorgio & Andrea Arosio

  • The most characteristic cultivation of our area was definitely the citrus grove. Since the XV Century monumental stone greenhouses were built around citrus trees planted in the ground. The citrus groves reached the peak in the middle of XIX Century.
  • We like to promote knowledge of the natural beauty here on Lake Garda and support the conservation of its territory. One example of this is the restoration of our lemon greenhouse where every week we organize a walking to deepen the tradition of citrus.
  • Did you know we produce our own extra vergin olive oil, lemon liqueur and bitter orange and lemon marmalades. Every week in our Hotel's historic cellar we organize wine tastings with wines from the Lake Garda area and various Italian regions.
  • Did you know D.H. Lawrence lived here from September 1912 to April 1913 and wrote some chapters of Thwilight in Italy. In our Hotel you can visit an exhibition about Lawrence's stay in Gargnano. You can also follow an easy walk on D.H. Lawrence's tracks.
  • Gargnano is in the center of Alto Garda Natural Park. From here you can make interesting walks to discover the natural beauties with unforgetable views on Lake Garda.
  • Our "Lido dei Limoni" Beach & Bar is located only 200 metres far from our Hotel. Our guests will enjoy an exclusive agreement for the rental of beach chairs, sun beds and beach umbrellas. Here it is also possible to rent kayaks and Sup.

Introducing

Giorgio & Andrea Arosio

The Arosio family bought this villa in 1925 as their summer home to escape the heat of Lodi (south of Milan) where they were very successful piano makers. In 1957 they opened their home to a few travellers looking for rooms to rent whilst visiting the lake. It was a great success and in 1965 the hotel opened its doors for business. All the family are deeply rooted in looking after guests.
