The Experience

You’re in the heart of the old town here and right by the sea, an easy stroll to restaurants, bars, chic boutiques and Porto-Vecchio harbour. Watch the fishermen haul in the day’s catch then buy your supper directly from them. Wander down narrow, cobbled alleyways, soak up the lively atmosphere, stop for an aperitivo.

The three-storey townhouse can be booked as two individual apartments or as a whole. It has been lovingly revived and filled with impressive antiques and clever vintage finds. The first-floor apartment has a stunning atrium filled with exotic plants and spacious lounge. It has two bedrooms with an additional bed on a mezzanine, and bathrooms are dreamy; check out the antique copper tub for two. The second-floor apartment, with three bedrooms, has exclusive use of the impressive rooftop terrace with panoramic views, an outdoor kitchen and a dipping pool (repurposed from an old French copper cheese vat) – you’ll never want to leave.

Each apartment has a kitchen/diner so the chef can chat as well as cook – or hire a local chef. Puglia and the coast await: you’re a 5-minute walk from Porta Vecchia beach and plenty more sandy coves are a slightly further stroll away.

Reviews

Annabel's place is a stunning example of patience and creativity, thoughtful restoration, mixing preservation with modern comforts. Guests will savour memories of nights up on the magical garden rooftop, either under the shady pergola, cooling off in the dipping pool, or having a meal prepared by a local cook under the stars. For a group of friends or families with older children, an ideal base.

We had a fantastic stay at Palazzo Esmeralda. Annabel was delightful. Extremely prompt in her communications; full of ideas for restaurants and sightseeing and most importantly, which beaches to head for. We stayed in the 1st floor apartment which is stylish, comfortable and full of charm and beautiful details. Can I mention the amazing copper bathtub and the swing seat??? The roof terrace is to die for with views of ancient roofs and domes in one direction and the endlessly blue sea in the other! We can’t wait to return!

We had the best time in this beautiful, artists town house in Monopoli. The views from the roof top and all the little details in the house - it was wonderful. We loved just walking around the historic town, soaking up the atmosphere and figuring out where to eat next. All the restaurants were so good and really welcoming to our young children. It was lovely to feel part of Italian culture for a week and not act the tourist. We spent lots of time on the coast too of course. By chance we were there for the Carnival in Putignano - some of the floats were amazing. It was a really fun night.

Had a very special time at Annabel’s gorgeous house in Monopoli. She has spent years bringing the house back to its original splendour and adding her own creative vision to make each space unique in its design and furnishings. Up on the rooftop I was transported by the view out to sea. The house sits on a lovely square in the heart of the old town with its pedestrianised cobbled streets, a short walk from other squares with bars and restaurants and the sea with its beach and beautiful harbour. Close at hand are many lovely beaches and other gorgeous historic villages/towns. A wonderful place.

Location

The neighbourhood

As well as getting snap happy and eating everything in sight, check out the cultural delights: Castello di Carlo V, a 16th century castle jutting out over the sea; Basilica of the Madonna della Madia cathedral; Palmieri Palace, a fine example of Lecce-inspired architecture. Wander down the paved promenade that runs along the coast. There are lots of beaches nearby, some wild, others with loungers.

Local points of interest from Annabel Pointon

  • From the apartment you can easily reach "Cala Porta Vecchia", a lovely sandy beach. Within 15 minutes walk you can also reach some of Monopoli's other beautiful beaches.
  • Don't miss a drive around Monopoli's countryside with its secular olive trees and its ancient "masserie"!
  • From Monopoli you can easily reach all the beautiful towns of Puglia: Polignano, with its breathtaking cliffs, the Caves of Castellana Grotte, the Trulli of Alberobello, or reach the enchanting old towns of Locorotondo and Martina Franca.
  • You can also visit the famous "White City" of Ostuni, a 30 minute trip by train or car. Matera, with its incredible landscape, and Lecce with its famous baroque architecture are one hour by car (or you can take the train) from Monopoli. Don't miss them!
