The Experience
It’s one room and a bathroom, but the feel isn’t cramped thanks to the lovely high ceiling with beams, stone walls and floors and windows which allow light to flood in – artists, nature lovers or those who just wish to be together in private will be very happy here. A double bed (which can be a twin) in one corner has Sicilian wrought iron supports and sits below a window with views, there’s a tiny wood-burner for chilly evenings and a comfy sofa.
Outdoors, find fragrant potted jasmine, olive, almond and carob trees, dry stone walls and loungers under a shady pergola; outdoor meals will be sublime and on clear days you can see a tiny slice of sea in the distance. Create Sicilian dishes over a small electric oven in the kitchen area with its lava stone top and open shelves, find local extra virgin olive oil, herbs and spices.
Doze in the sun, forget your worldly cares, cool off under a large rain shower in the attractive bathroom.

The Shephard’s hut is a gorgeous and secluded place to stay. We loved the location and setting with views out across rural Sicily and thought the interiors were beautiful. The house has everything you need and feels like a wonderful retreat from some of the more hectic bits of Sicily. The local town of Scicli was one of our favorite places on the island!

We loved our stay in Shepherd's Retreat. The building has been sympathetically and tastefully restored and designed by Felicity - a spacious modern bathroom and a comfortable, boutique living space. It was cool inside when temperatures rose, and we enjoyed the peace of the verandah in the mornings. Nearby Scicli was one of our favourite towns on the island - baroque churches and a stunning rocky backdrop, mercifully less touristy than other towns - and it has a cinema! Highly recommend Shepherd's Retreat for a couple. We will be back.

Location
The neighbourhood
Explore the Noto valley with its rich history, wild flowers in spring, wonderful regional dishes, baroque towns and picturesque coastline. Modica is a 15-minute drive, Ragusa Ibla 30 minutes. The Plaia Grande beach and the Irminio River Reserve are 20 minutes. Visit wine producers; explore Marzamemi, a fishing village where you can have lunch on the rocks and buy their well known tuna products.
Local points of interest from Felicity Good
- The house is situated in the south of Sicily known as the Barock triangle; Noto, Ragusa and Modica. Stunning Scicli, has a perfect scale to explore its many churches, cafes, a cinema paradiso, restaurants and a unique Italian rationalist Cinema Paradiso.
- Local lovely beaches are Plaja Grande, part of which is a beautiful nature reserve, a 25 min. drive and Sampieri, a 15 min drive. Enjoy the tiny historic centre of Sampieri with its bar gelateria with delicious local fare & stroll along the endless beach.
- Modica, Ragusa and Noto have examples of beautiful barock architecture; in Modica the Chiesa di San Giorgio. Then visit the famous chocolate shop Bonajuto with delicious chocolate and pistachio filled cannoli.
- Ragusa Ibla, a 25 min drive is a unique 17th hillside town. Park the car then amble up through to Duomo, St George, eat the best ice cream ever at the gelateria on the Platz duomo and stroll on down through to the GardiniIblei and enjoy the panoramic view.
- Walk around Siracusa's Ortigia, the historic city centre which is perched above a sea wall with stunning views in all directions. Climb down steps for a swim! St John's Basilica is my favourite church in the world, archaic and with a unique ambiance.
- Segesta, a superb doric temple from 5BC with an amphitheatre in a remote rural setting is unparalleled. Combine with a trip to Palermo & visit the cute little seaside San Vito di Capo on the way, 70 km from Segesta, just over an hours drive from Palermo.

Felicity is a British set designer and architect, currently working in Berlin. She restored the building over about five years into her home-from-home – her escape when work allows her to. She shares it so that others can find a rural refuge, unplug from hectic lives and reconnect with nature. You let yourselves in and Felicity is always available by phone if you need anything.
Amazing location for a blissfully quiet week among olive groves and grazing of local small farmers. So close to the beautiful town of Scicli which has great restaurants and ambience - a joy to walk around. The nearby beaches are clean and sandy. A lovely little house with everything you need, beautiful bathroom and well equipped kitchen area. Would definitely come back!
