The Experience

This striking 19th-century building, poised on a hill, was once the doctor’s countryside home. Today, it’s a boutique hotel with 14 contemporary rooms tucked within its old stone walls. Original tiled floors, arched windows and vaulted fresco ceilings juxtapose with a modern glass walkway, soothing spa and Eames furniture.

En suite bedrooms are a mix of sizes; those in the scented gardens feel more private, all have high ceilings and stay cool in the summer heat. One suite has a mezzanine bedroom reached by a spiral staircase, another has a jacuzzi under the stars, some have balconies.

Continental breakfast is served on the leafy terrace – enjoy local treats including ricotta, focaccia and chocolate from Modica. It’s a short drive into the historic centre for an array of restaurants, and pretty Ragusa Ibla is a little further for a taste of real Sicily: labyrinthine lanes and old palazzi on shaded squares.

Location

The neighbourhood

Visit Castello di Donnafugata (18km), a sumptuous neo-Gothic palace filled with a fashion and costume collection running to over 3,000 items. You're spoilt for choice with beaches – try Punta Secca, made popular by the TV series Inspector Montalbano. Punta Braccetto (flanked by a nature reserve) and Donnalucata (good for families) are within 30 minutes. Take a lip-smacking chocolate tour in Modica.

Local points of interest from The Team Villa Boscarino

  • Take the scenic walk connecting Ragusa Alta to Ragusa Ibla, descending through stone stairways and quiet streets that reveal the city’s layered soul. Pause at Santa Maria delle Scale for one of the most beautiful panoramic views over Ibla’s rooftops and bell towers, especially at sunset.
  • Punta Secca, home to Montalbano’s famous seaside house, along with the baroque streets of Scicli, often featured as Vigata in the show. In Ragusa Ibla, wander through Piazza Duomo, the Giardino Ibleo and the maze of historic alleys that capture the timeless atmosphere of southeastern Sicily.
  • A visit to Modica is essential for its noble palazzi, baroque churches and ancient chocolate-making tradition. Stop at Antica Dolceria Bonajuto, Sicily’s oldest chocolate factory, to taste the city’s distinctive grainy chocolate, still produced using an age-old Aztec-inspired method.
  • Spend an afternoon tasting freshly made cheeses, local olive oil and regional wines while discovering the traditions that shape the area’s celebrated cuisine. Wine lovers can also enjoy guided tours and tastings at local wineries to discover Cerasuolo di Vittoria, the region’s renowned DOCG wine.
  • Golden beaches, a long seafront promenade and a relaxed Mediterranean atmosphere make Marina di Ragusa perfect for slower days by the sea. Enjoy bike rides along the waterfront cycle path, linger over aperitivi at sunset and dine in lively seafood restaurants overlooking the marina.
  • Noto with its honey-coloured palazzi, grand staircases and sunlit piazzas. Marzamemi, a charming fishing village known for its relaxed atmosphere, waterfront restaurants and picturesque harbour. From here, visitors can also enjoy boat excursions along the coast, discovering hidden coves.
