The Experience

The heady smell of orange blossom on a warm breeze greets you at the gates to animal-lover Lorenzo’s organic farm, where he and his wife live with five adopted dogs. Around the 18th-century farmhouse stretch the grounds: succulent plants, palms and oaks, cotton bushes and citrus trees provide a deliciously sensory setting for the large pool. Laid-back Lorenzo has created an alluring retreat with an appeal that comes from its disarming simplicity – a charming touch of the ascetic in the aesthetics – but which artfully combines old and new: tiled floors, simple colour schemes in the bedrooms, arched windows with shutters, exposed stone walls, vintage painted furniture… even a couple of rooms with no TV, and all complemented by smart modern bathrooms. Breakfasts (and dinner) are organic and vegetarian with lots of farm produce, from freshly baked bread to homemade juice and jams (grapefruit, orange and cinnamon, lemon…). Shops and restaurants are just a couple of miles down the road, Siracusa is within easy distance, bikes can be hired and several natural reserves popular with bird watchers are close by.

We spent 3 nights at La Casa di Melo which is well-situated for visiting Siracusa but provides a lovely relaxing setting on an organic farm. Our room was spacious and clean, with a very comfortable bed and nice linens and a large bathroom with shower. We had dinner here for 2 of our 3 nights, and we highly recommend it. All four courses were excellent, made with fresh ingredients primarily sourced from their organic farm, and we had fantastic wine from the Etna region. Breakfast is equally tasty and generous. Marina (Lorenzo's sister) was gracious and helpful. We would love to return.

A peaceful and very comfortable stay at Casa Di Melo. Ideally situated for visiting Syracuse, Noto and the south east coast. So lovely to come back and relax by the beautiful pool. Rooms were comfortable. Tapas evening meals and breakfasts on the terrace were excellent. Staff were welcoming and very helpful. Highly recommend .

We loved it! Restful, relaxing - an oasis of calm. A welcome break among Sicily's amazing and unrivaled historical sites (and sights). Lawrence & Simon are charming, attentive and knowledgeable, about the area, the food and passionate about local wine. Loved starting the day with a dip in the pool, and ending it with one of their amazing buffets (the breakfasts are equally amazing - and huge), a glass or two of excellent wine and Nino Nino or Monstro as company. With Siracusa, my favourite place in Sicilia.

We had a marvellous ten days here. The hospitality food and ambience were wonderful. Lorenzo and Chiara were superb hosts. The food was a treat...vegetarian might sound challenging but with the flavours of the Sicilian country menu it was a joy. Lorenzo's enthusiasm for Sicilian organic wines meant that we were treated to a whole new perspective on wines of that region...not the inevitable Nero d' Avola ut a whole new vision of Sicilian wine making. We certainly hope to return to this relaxing and beautiful place and to enjoy such hospitality.
