The Experience

The feel is remote, the views are superb. From the infinity pool and through the glass walls of the living area you look over a canyon, typical of the area and archaeologically fascinating; the Ionian Sea is to your left, hills all around. You just want to stand, or float, and stare. To reach this dramatic spot – only 20 minutes’ drive from sandy beaches – you wind slowly up through the Monti Iblei – the Hyblaean Mountains.

The villa is on two levels, its lines inspired by contemporary architecture, the bathrooms with Mount Etna lava stone sinks, and simple, comfortable bedrooms (two on the ground floor, one up a few stairs); bedheads are colourfully tiled Sicilian-style. Living spaces are uncluttered, open plan and full of light – and those stunning views.

There’s a playground under the shade of olive trees and a garden; you can shop in Cassibile (where the armistice between Italy and the Allies was signed in 1943). Nearby are UNESCO historic towns Syracuse and Noto to explore.

Reviews

Villa Domus is a minimalistic, airy abode surrounded by the idyllic Sicilian countryside dotted with carob and olive trees. The abundance of light, the clean geometries, the polished surfaces and the stunning infinity pool overlooking the canyon far to the sea, make it the ideal stop for an international traveller seeking a private location with a blend of contemporary spirit and Sicilian touches.

A lovely villa in beautiful surroundings. The view from the pool is dramatic. Very comfortable and practical. A great location for exploring Noto, Syracuse and lovely beaches. Occasional goat traffic on the road, cow bells in the olive groves and very loud cicadas added to the charm! Andrew is very helpful and kind.

Charlotte, London

We had such a happy holiday in this gorgeous, sleek villa. So much light, well-stocked, easy to relax in and great views. Feels wonderfully remote yet is near lots of sights/excursions too! Andrew, the host, was very attentive and kind. We hope to return. :)

Samantha, Painswick

Beautiful spacious villa in the most incredible location, swimming in the infinity pool with views to the gorge and the sea was really something else. We had many useful recommendations from Andrew and any questions were answered promptly. The hike to the cascade de Cavagrande was the highlight with a wonderful swim in the pools at the bottom, recommend going early with lots of water.

Sandra, Northend, Warwickshire

Wonderful well equipped homely villa with a beautiful pool and the most fabulous views. Owner extremely accommodating and helpful. Villa contains everything required for a great holiday. Location very peaceful ideal for a relaxing break but close to great beaches and places of archeological interest. We can thoroughly recommend and will be back to explore the area further.

Location

The neighbourhood

The villa is surrounded by olive trees and deeply immersed in the countryside for lovely walks, perhaps in the cool of the evening. Beaches and restaurants are at Fontane, 6kms away. The town of Avola where the famous red wine Nero D'Avola is made is 10kms away. The beautiful town of Noto is a 25-minute drive - don't miss the cathedral which is listed among UNESCO's World Heritage Sites.

Local points of interest from Andrew Muscat

  • The Cavagrande di Cassible Nature Reserve is only a 15 minutes' drive away. It is a majestic and evocative nature reserve with beautiful freshwater lakes. For nature lovers, there are ample places to walk and trek in unspoilt and beautiful countryside.
