The Experience

It’s tricky to know how to start describing this extraordinary, rather eccentric place. Maybe just come – we can’t think of a single person who wouldn’t like it, except perhaps the unsociable who aren’t interested in food or natural beauty – and who wants to holiday with them anyway? So, it’s a bumpy, thrilling and steep drive uphill from the sparkling pools and waterfalls of the Corsalone river to reach the sort of views which are exciting and restful all at the same time. You’ll also find Novanta, a series of ancient buildings once used as an artistic retreat, plus a treehouse and skylodge, now serene places to stay around a central farmhouse. Here you eat, splendidly at a communal table with other guests and sometimes friends of the four Dutchmen and their crew who look after you. Join in if you like – hang around the kitchen if you want, help gather salads from the garden, chatter to adorable chef Jereon. You bed down in rustic splendour in whichever building you choose, you can wander the garden, make pasta, chat to the butcher, take a silent pilgrimage to La Verna or just read by the pool in a hammock. This is heaven.

The neighbourhood

Local points of interest from Anne Vortmann

  • Novanta is not just your average hotel in the Tuscan hills - Novanta is an Experience Hotel! Your senses are stimulated from the moment you wake up in the morning until the moment you lay your head down at night!
  • Surrounding out beautiful ancient village are acres upon acres of wild undiscovered forest. The perfect place for hunting for truffles, finding a secluded place for a picnic, or hiking up the mountain to discover our magical monestary at La Verna
  • Our weekly hike up to our neighbour Fabrizio's farm is an experience not to be missed - his organically reared heritage breed pigs are his pride and joy and along with his wonderful wife Mery, and mother Nella they will create a lunch you will never forget
  • The stunning clear blue waters of our Corsalone river are just a stones throw away. Take a picnic with you, or come and join us for a big communal lunch. Sunbathing, cocktails and waterfall jumping are all on the menu when Novanta goes to the river!
  • Our beautiful "Borgo" is a collection of 20 ancient buildings and formerly home to around 300 people. The village was abandoned for many years before becoming the home of Novanta. Take a walk around 1000 years of history - see what you can find!
