On the slopes of an extinct volcano, three houses dating from the 17th century have been sensitively and eco-consciously restored by Massimo. Although you’re only 500m from the main road it feels remote here, with only the sound of cicadas and rushing water from the stream.Find simple and serene rooms, plenty of spaces to sit quietly with a book both inside and out, and a compact kitchen with all the essentials plus an excellent coffee machine. Light up the barbecue for dinner under the stars or drive less than ten minutes for Michelin-starred dining. You can swim in the river or tramp through lovely beech and chestnut woods, and there are at least five thermal springs from 15 minutes to one hour away. Massimo lives on site and is on hand if you need anything.

A marvellous place. The best I've visited in Italy. Right in the middle of nature, with a very simple style and very tasteful. It's a cosy and magical place, where I could see myself resting a lot. The house is beautiful and spotless. There is a river nearby, vineyards and fireflies at night. I am very grateful to have found this place. Thanks Massimo.

A lot of peace and nature! Accommodation great - kitchen and bathroom beautiful.

Dorothee, Switzerland

The nature around this house is beautiful, for walking and relaxing along the river.

Sara, Sarteano

Casa della Buca is a wonderful bolt-hole where you feel far from the outside world and can re-connect with nature. Rooms are soothing and quiet, while outside you can plunge into the cool mountain stream at the bottom of the garden, or bbq in the woods. A tonic for the body and mind where you can fill your lungs with clean mountain air and soak in one of the many thermal baths nearby.

  • Missing the city? Dine in a restaurant in Siena or Grosseto (around 1 hour away) or visit Florence or Perugia (2 hours away). Visit Montalcino and the wine cellars of the famous ‘Brunello’ and enjoy a glass of wine with a vie (half an hour away)..

Massimo Catalfo

Massimo the owner is warm and welcoming in a quiet rather than effusive way. Originally from Treviso, he worked in multimedia in France and studied in London for a while, then decided to turn a new page in his life by buying this ruin in the middle of the woods when it was almost swallowed completely by greenery, and with only a footpath to reach it.
