The Experience
This family-run hotel oozes history from its 1000-year-old walled fortress, perched on an imposing promontory. Inspiring views stretch over a lush green valley, framed by the rugged Garfagnana mountains, while hidden behind mighty walls lies a secret garden of lawns and ancient pine trees.
Choose a spacious room or grand suite in the handsome four-storey property and feel utterly indulged: beautiful antiques, crystal chandeliers and spoiling en suite bathrooms with gold-flecked marble from the Apuan Alps set the calm tone. Unwind in the lounge or TV room.
Breakfasts are delicious, with homemade cakes and jams, plus local cheeses, hams and salamis, enjoyed outside with the views or in the fire-warmed dining room. Dinner can be arranged or stroll into the pretty town for pizzerias, trattorias and aperitivo bars. Skiing is possible until Easter in nearby Abetone, while walking and mountain-bike trails meander in every direction. Massage, yoga and Sound Healing are by arrangement.

Location
The neighbourhood
Northern Tuscany has a magic all its own. From the Apennines to its vineyard-covered rolling hills, this is a place for outdoor lovers. Well-tended hiking and biking trails take you up mighty mountains, past glassy lakes and through ancient forests. The towns of Castelnuovo and Barga (hosts a jazz festival each summer) are a delight and Lucca (an hour away) is a must visit.
Local points of interest from Manola Bertani
- Drive about 25 minutes to the Riserva Naturale Parco dell'Orecchiella, a wonderful area in the mountains for hiking and spotting wildlife.
- The Church of Santa Maria in Vitoio is a very old, beautiful church in a forest of centuries-old chestnut trees.
- Gramolazzo artificial lake is 25 minutes away by car. Walk around, rent a boat, or just relax and take in the mountain views.
- Barga is an interesting and picturesque village with a very important church. There's also a good choice of restaurants and pubs.
- Take the train from the station in Camporgiano to Lucca. When you arrive, rent a bike and cycle along the top of the ancient walls.
- Relax at the 19th-century marble thermal baths in Bagni di Lucca, Bagni Bernabò. Don't miss a visit to the Devil's Bridge in Borgo a Mozzano too.

Introducing
Manola Bertani
The Guasparini family took ownership of La Rocca around the time of Italian unification between 1860 and 1870. It was converted in the 1920s into a private family residence and renovated in 2024 into a hotel. The family are genuinely dedicated to this amazing place as well as being generous, natural hosts.
