The Experience

It’s basically just one big room (it used to house the gardener for the main building) but it’s well put-together, a place for everything and everything in its place, so you won’t feel at all cramped. There are plenty of books to read and a wood-burning stove for chilly evenings but mostly you’ll be outdoors on the deckchairs facing the trees, eating al fresco or swinging in the hammock – it’s all well lit in the evenings.

The kitchenette along one wall has an oven/microwave, double induction hob, kettle, toaster and Nespresso machine, so it’s fine for preparing meals for yourselves and you’re left a few basics like oil, salt, pepper etc. Head straight out to the Eroica route for some fine cycling, and walks will be sublime.

Come for total peace and quiet, to recharge your energy levels in the great outdoors and feel at one with nature. Cookery classes and wine tastings can be arranged.

We think you'll love

  • The rural feel of isolation, but being only a 20-minute drive to Siena. There's a local bus once a day too
  • That there are no other guests – the owners will be in the big house but they're happy to leave you to your own devices unless you need them
  • All the fabulous cycling and walking on the doorstep, the winery next door and superb trips through Chianti and the Crete Senesi

Location

The neighbourhood

The nearest restaurant is in Pianella (a ten-minute drive) where you'll also find a bar, grocery shop, post office, hairdresser and bike hire. There are other restaurants within ten minutes to half an hour, to suit all pockets. Taste regional wines, hike, cycle, explore medieval towns, visit Siena and Florence for a day out and a culture fix, or simply revel in the greenery and tranquillity here.

Local points of interest from Liliane & Hans Berendsen

  • San Giusto a Rentennano, our neighbour, is a real family estate, known for there excellent Chianti wines, especially their Percarlo. Castello di Brolio is an historic castle with significant Chianti Classico wine production, offering tours and tasting.
  • From June to September there are many concerts and festivals, like the Chigiana masterclasses in Siena, Philip Herreweghe in Asciano, l' Amiata pianofestival near the Monte Amiata, the concerts at La Foce (Crete Senesi), and in places like Radda and Gaiole
  • L’Eroica is the famous cycling race held on the 'strade bianche' (gravel roads) in the area. Riders use vintage bicycles and equipment and wear vintage cycling clothing for the long race.
  • Castello di Spaltenna is a Michelin-starred luxury hotel and restaurant in Gaiole. There are also two Michelin-starred restaurants, l' Asinello and la Bottega del 30, in Villa a Sesta and Poggio Rosso in San Felice.
  • Certosa di Pontignano: old monastery with 3 cloisters, old chapel, now hotel-restaurant, nice place for an aperitivo, lunch and diner.
  • Local producers Nicoletta Penco Ceramics (Spaltenna) and Rampini Ceramics (Radda) both have lovely designs – typical Tuscan and their own creations.
