The Experience

For four generations, Eleanora’s family have watched the gondolas and singing gondoliers glide by this bright palazzo opposite the Teatro La Fenice. No one really knows the age of the house, but it’s surely 15th century judging by the frescoes, marble stairs, stucco and floors alla Veneziana. Old world luxury meets new in three canal-facing bedrooms: colourful fabric on antique chairs, headboards, framed prints, sleek reading lights and iron bedsteads with stacks of pillows and new bed line. One room opts for the red velvety cube-style armchairs and a gold-framed mirror. The Green Room might just be the prettiest, and a glimpse through ephemeral curtains sees white cushions playfully fastened to an iron bedstead… all beneath a chandelier and eventually sliding onto the terrazzo floors of a state-of-the-art bathroom. That’s what works here: it’s smart and chic, but has the intimacy and pedigree of something smaller, grander. As well as managing three children, Eleanora greets each guest personally; over breakfast in the dining room is a good time to question this bona fide Venetian.

Wonderful location with two sided room overlooking two canals. At this junction the gondolas with their brilliant opera singing entertainers would meet and be singing right underneath the windows, magical.

Centrally located opposite the Venice Opera House, Al Teatro is the perfect base from which to explore the many and varied treasures that this beautiful city and surrounding islands have to offer. We stayed in the Amber Room which is a good size, well furnished, has clean refreshing decor, air conditioning, Wi-fi and a balcony which over-looks the canal. There is also a well equipped en-suite bathroom which includes an over-bath shower with plenty of hot water. Breakfast is continental in style and is wholesome, fresh and plentiful providing all that one would expect from a B&B establishment.

Our visit to Venice was made special by Eleonora Agostini, owner of B&B 'Al Teatro' wonderfully situated, and yet quiet and peaceful, behind the Opera House close to but away from the overcrowded areas such as San Marco Square and the Rialto. We used the convenient Vaporetta from the Airport, and knew this was not a luxury hotel for those looking for all that offers, but epitomised what we could afford, wanted and where we needed to be. The 'Gritti Palace' is 2 minutes away! Eleonora gave us invaluable advice on sightseeing, restaurants and is a gracious host. We will return hopefully soon

The neighbourhood

Local points of interest from Eleonora Agostini

  • Al Teatro B&B is perfectly placed in a quiet part of Venice, very central less than 5 minutes walk from San Marco Square and all its attractions (Shops, restaurants, Cathedral, etc.) very easy to walk to off of the Vaporetto stop - no bridges!
  • Looking out the window of our rooms and seeing the gondolas go by added to the magic of the ambiance that was already perfect.
  • The breakfast is plenty choice of fresh fruits, toasts, biscuits, bread, cereals, yogurts, juices, jams, cold cuts of meat and cheese, coffee, tea, cappucino, hot choccolate, even cakes or croissants.
  • The wi-fi is free, reliable and works in all the B&B (rooms and common areas).
