The Experience

A steep climb but worth it. On the top of Lisbon’s highest hill, above narrow cobbled streets thick with activity, this small 18th-century palace is tucked in the walls of medieval San Jorge castle. The city tumbles away below; a view you can wake up to. Other bedrooms gaze over the castle. Each is an elegant mix of original features and modern styling: tiled or wooden floors and minimalist furnishings, bold stripes and lace curtains, wooden ceilings and cool colours. All have spacious, bright bathrooms; some have verandas. Breakfast on the large, sun-filled patio with its fountain, colourful Portuguese tiling and greenery; a lovely spot to relax with a book or evening drink, too. Beware the peacocks! They fly in from the neighbouring castle; harmless but sometimes chattery. On cooler days, there’s a large and stylish living area where leather sofas and antique tables mix with white pillars and exposed stone walls. Lisbon is, literally, at your feet, from San Jorge castle to the waterside Jeronimo’s monastery. Only residents and taxis can drive inside the medieval village; transfers can be arranged. Listen to Fado music in a nearby bar then return to your romantic eyrie.

Reviews

We had a wonderful weekend here back in February 2006. The building was originally part of the Castle and housed the kitchens. They sent a vehicle down to the town to collect us and we found all the staff to be most agreeable. Our room was amazing with a decanter of port on the dressing table which was filled each day. There were also platters of fresh fruit everywhere throughout the hotel. Also they had an honesty bar in the lounge. As it was my partner's birthday they gave us a bottle of champagne !!! Highly recommend x
