The Experience
You’ll feel connected to the water – light pours in through large windows with their stunning views of the beautiful Zêzere river and the Templar tower of Dornes – history lovers will be in their element. There’s much comfort too – with a large living room opening onto a veranda for reading (you’ll find books) or simply chatting. Bedrooms are all en suite, three in the main house and two (larger) in a separate building – some have their own veranda and outdoor jacuzzis.
Breakfast includes eggs from their hens, homemade cheese from their goats, jams and marmalade from their orchard and home baked bread from the wood oven – delicious Portuguese dinners are offered – boat picnics and barbecues.
Enjoy a swim in the river lake, borrow a boat, strike out on a paddle board, net crayfish, or set off on a quad bike.
Activities throughout the year include bread making, enjoying a Fado, and discovering the rich history of this special place.

Location
The neighbourhood
This peninsula is a special place - rich in history, wildlife and water birds. Walks will be sublime, swimming and boating glorious. It's a short walk into Dornes for a couple of restaurant/cafés and of course the wonderful church and watch tower. Frasoeira is 10km for a grocery shop, and further afield is Ferreira do Zêzere for a wider choice of shops and restaurants.
Local points of interest from Marta Da Silva Lopes
- Dornes pentagonal tower - unique in Portugal, built by the Knights Templar, included in the Templar route.
- The Convent of Christ in Tomar, Portugal, is a monumental complex that includes the Templar Castle, the Charola (rotunda), the Manueline church, and other buildings. Construction began in 1160 and it was reconfigured over the centuries.
- In the middle of the Tejo River, the enigmatic Almourol Castle is one of the most emblematic monuments of the Christian Reconquista. Located on a small island in the middle of the Tejo River, Almourol Castle is one of the most emblematic monuments.
- The geodetic marker is a masonry pyramid that marks the center of Portugal. Construction began in 1802 and it is situated at an altitude of 587 meters. From the top, one obtains an excellent 360º view over the entire region.
- The Mira de Aire Caves, discovered in 1947, have an entrance at an altitude of 300m, but inside the caves the depth drops to 180m. Their formation dates back 150 million years, to the Middle Jurassic period, when dinosaurs inhabited this region.
- The Zêzere River in this region is largely unexplored, which is why boat trips are extraordinary, allowing visitors to fully enjoy the surrounding nature.

Introducing
Marta Da Silva Lopes
João and Marta (the Barbara and Tom of Portugal) are living an authentic, self-sufficient life here. They use solar panels for green energy, their own river water for irrigation, grow and rear their own food and are steeped in local life - sharing wine and olive presses with neighbours, buying shared cows. Their knowledge of the area is as fascinating as the peninsula itself.
