The Experience
You’re just a two-minute walk from the centre of town and the harbour with its indoor covered fish market, so head down early for their famous clams and a myriad of other fresh produce straight from the boats. Bring your haul back to sleek granite worktops and plenty of space for prepping, or find an outdoor sink, comfy seating and barbecue up on the third-floor roof terrace. Views are Moorish: curved roofs, church spires, storks’ nests, mountains and sea.
Bedrooms (twin/doubles) are all a good size with tall ceilings, long windows with shutters, and gorgeous views over town: each has its own bathroom with walk-in showers. If the weather turns cold – which is rare in the Algarve – there is a wood-burner in the sitting room, but mostly you’ll be snoozing on sunbeds up the spiral staircase to the second roof terrace.
Stock up in the little store 20 metres from the door or spoil yourselves with supper at A do Fernando – a family-run place.

My partner & I have just come home from a five week stay at Casa Candido, Olhao, Portugal. We both wanted to say how much we enjoyed staying at the property - particularly the spectacular view of from the roof terrace on new years eve & having breakfast up there in sunshine in December. The property is really comfortable & well kept & made a good base for exploring without a car: using train, bus & taxi was easy. The owner, Katy McBurnie, was also really kind and helpful when I had a health issue while we were staying. All in all we had a wonderful customer experience.

This is a beautiful house, a stone’s throw from the centre of Olhao. It is a quick walk to the markets, local restaurants and all amenities. There is great attention to detail within the house. Sharp knives, ample kitchenware. It really feels like a home from home. The outdoor terraces are gorgeous. Katy was very responsive and helpful. I would highly recommend a stay in this beautiful house and town.

We spent an entire month off-season here and were completely happy with the choice. The location of the enchanting house could hardly be better, all the important places such as supermarkets, ferries to the islands or the train station, can be reached in a few minutes on foot. The terrace offers a great all-round view. Reliable wifi was pretty important to us because we also had to work, it didn't even let us down. The kitchen is perfectly equipped. Heating with the air conditioning also worked impeccably. Communication with Katy was always friendly, straightforward, and helpful.

Location
The neighbourhood
Once you've explored all of the town you can hop on a ferry to the islands of Culatra or Armona - both have wonderful white sandy beaches. Go for a boat tour or a bike trip round the Ria Formosa natural park - there's plenty of flora and fauna to spot, including flamingos and maybe even dolphins. The old towns of Faro and Tavira are fascinating to explore.
Local points of interest from Katy McBurnie
- 2014 THE TELEGRAPH The top 5 food and drink holidays in Portugal, “Shellfish in the Ria Formosa- If you want to try your hand at digging for razor clams or finding cockles and mussels, try the warm waters of the Ria Formosa. "
- A popular past time in our family, suitable for all ages, is to jump in a water taxi and speed across to Farol, one of our local islands, where we while away the hours bathing, resting, exploring and of course enjoying the Portuguese hospitality.
- If you would like to reach Faro - the nearest bustling city with historic town and harbour, just jump on the Olhao train and you are there in ten minutes.
- My favourite spot in the morning is in a comfy armchair on the first terrace, calm and serene, enjoying a cup of tea. My favourite place in the evening is on the top terrace, relaxed on a lounger, overlooking the town, with a glass of Vino Verde in hand.
- If you are a fan of all sport then there is a friendly sports bar, Prego@Fundo, minutes from the house, where you can watch sport on multiple screens inside or out, not to mention a pretty mean toastie.

Introducing
Katy McBurnie
Robin and Katy live in the UK and letting Casa Candido is a new venture for them - they completely renovated the house themselves. They know this area and have been coming here for years. Anna from the clothes shop down the road will meet and greet you, then is on hand if you need her.
This was our second stay at Casa Candido, and we loved everything about it once again! The villa is spotless, beautifully maintained, and has everything you could possibly need for a relaxing holiday. The location is perfect, peaceful yet close to everything. Host Katie is fabulous, nothing too much trouble and she made sure everything was perfect for our stay. Looking forward to visiting again and returning to Olhao, which we love too.
