The Experience

Birds, bees and sea breezes rustling the trees in the leafy garden. That’s all you’ll hear from your lounger as you sit beside the glittering pool. Choose from a two-storey villa with a private pool, an apartment or a standalone cottage, or take all five whitewashed casas and bring the whole tribe (grown ups only).

Moorish details are dotted throughout: original terracotta floors and decorative tiles, pretty stained glass windows, domed ceilings and arched doorways. The feel is relaxed and unfussy with comfortable furniture making the most of the light-filled bedrooms – some en suite. Every window frames a knockout view.

Arrive to a delicious hamper of local treats in your kitchen, none are huge but most open onto the living room for extra conviviality. Barbecue in your private al fresco space or gather with fellow guests in the shared gardens. Drive to restaurants and Loulé market in under ten minutes, or be on the coast in 15.

Reviews

Monte Borboleta is extremely well located in the hills of the Algarve overlooking a vast expanse of coastline. It is secluded and quiet, but also close enough to all the hustle and bustle to keep you properly entertained. You may find you prefer to just sit by the pool with a book, listening to the birds and the wind in the palm trees.

Location

The neighbourhood

Tucked in the hills between Loulé and Faro, countryside calm surrounds you but the buzzy Algarve is at your feet. Owners Nick and Mia live nearby and can recommend great places to dine, from small local eateries to special occasion restaurants where you can splash out. Numerous beaches are strung along the golden coast. Discover Roman ruins, natural parks, caves, markets, posh shopping and more.

Local points of interest from Nick & Mia

  • Nature abounds. Monte Borboleta (Hill of Butterflies) sits in a mountainous natural reserve with views of the UNESCO-protected Ria Formosa wetlands, an important hibernation/breeding area for birds and marine life, explorable by boardwalk.
  • We’re 12 minutes from the region’s famed Golden Triangle with its abundance of quality restaurants but we’ll also delight in offering our tips for authentic dining experiences in neighbouring hills and villages.
  • Monte Borboleta is an idyllic “hidden gem” but centrally placed, and only minutes from the motorway than runs the length of the Algarve.
  • Faro, Silves, Tavira, Lagos are historic and bustling towns. The Saturday market in nearby Loulé is not to be missed.
  • We’re a haven to return to after exertions in towns or on the beach. Fill a glass, take a lounger, feast your eyes on the amazing panoramic view and breathe in some of the best air Europe has to offer.
  • We’re self-catering but with all the comforts and attention you would expect from a boutique hotel: there when you need us but not in your face.
