The Experience
Up, up, up between eucalyptus trees, glimpsing distant Algarve beaches, to your white-washed cottage huddled against the mountains. A wisteria-and-vine-hung terrace sets the tone for this comfortably rustic hideaway: terracotta tiled floors, chestnuts beams, white rough-plaster walls. Rocking chairs cluster around a stone fireplace in the living room while the kitchen is cheery with Portuguese pottery and a scrubbed dining table. A marble table on the terrace, too, for al fresco eating. There’s a little beamed ground-floor bedroom with a pretty view and two rooms upstairs, one (for romantics), light and airy with its own door to the terrace and steps to the garden; perfect for long lazy breakfasts or star-gazing with a drink in hand. There’s a small shower room and larger bathroom to share; white and simple. Plenty to do for the active in and around Monchique – hiking, canoeing, cycling, beaches – and pretty Silves for the curious. Or doze around the pool in the garden, lush with dappled shade and fruit trees; birdsong and crickets the only sounds. You are in an area of outstanding natural beauty. Magical.

We arrived following Hurricane Joachin's visit to the region but the house was a most comfortable and hospitable haven from the fog which covered the area for most of the time we were there. The owner arranged car hire and food and a wonderful log fire (endless fuel) on arrival so it is a house that adapts well to a cooler climate. It must be spectacular in the summer with its lovely pool and grounds for adventure and outside dining. The west coast is a short drive for a different climate, delicious and inexpensive fish and fewer tourists. Highly recommended for families.

We had a lovely relaxing September break here. Truly idyllic location, well hidden in the beautiful hills above Monchique, with distant views of the sea and easily accessible from Faro airport. Great having breakfast and BBQs on gorgeous terraces and star-gazing at night! Plenty to do if you love tranquility, nature, scenic walks and West and South coasts are easy to get to too. The pool was wonderful - we had plenty of chance to lounge and swim in the sun. Inside was clean and rustic with a large selection of books and a cosy open fire for the colder evenings. Would definitely recommend!

We have lost count now of the number of visits to Quinta da Relva and it never fails to please. Situated away from it all in the hills of Monchique this lovely farmhouse is all we need for peace & tranquility & just a 10 minute walk away from the informal restaurant "Rampa" who serve the best chicken piri piri served by the lovely friendly owners! Our days were spent either lazing in the sunshine around the pool area ,driving to the West coast beaches, our favourite being Amoreira and sometimes in an evening having a cocktail in either Monchique or Caldas de Monchique. We will not hesitate to book this again when time allows us to escape.

It really is something quite special, from the amazing wisteria, the inviting pool, finding hidden corners in the grounds to the growing sense of tranquility we felt during the week. The car hire company that was recommended was great- pick up was smooth and it was a very easy journey to get there. Having groceries in (as pre-arranged when we booked) was lovely and a great welcome. We visited the fantastic beaches on the west and south coast and enjoyed exploring on quiet roads and in local towns. We had a great day with Lucio from Alternativ Tours- hike to the Foia peak, 32 km bike ride downhill then into canoes and a swim. Everything in the house was in good order and the maid kept it nice and clean. There was a wide choice of local restaurants: good piri piri chicken was easy to find. We were very grateful to the agents for printing out our boarding cards on Easter Friday - everyone concerned with the cottage has been very supportive. As a place to both get away yet still have access to Algarve's natural attractions, this place was wonderful.

Local points of interest from Diana Hudson
- .Stunning mountain location 35 mins from deserted beaches beaches. Children under 10 have all their activities paid for by us
- Walk, paint, cycle, spot rare flora and fauna, canoe, write, snooze, pick flowers, surf, decorate the Christmas tree, snuggle up by the fire, read, all the books, squeeze oranges, chase butterfies. It's all yours...
- A traditional farmhouse, a cosy family home, big open fire and hayloft, lovingly restored, a labour of love over 31 years. Our visitors book says 'Paradise' 'Heaven' and 'The best holiday, anywhere, ever!' and 'How did all those stars get there'?
- Complete healthy holiday. Organic food almost impossible to avoid. Produce travels metres not miles; swim in spring water, lie in the garden eating fruit as it drops off the trees; drink wine from the local adega., A massage by the pool maybe.
- Beachlife is 35 mins away in either direction. Choose from the south coast, small secluded coves and boat trips; spot yachts in the marina, or go west, through foothills and forests for big beaches, national park, spot dolphins and walk the cliff paths.

Lovely characterful villa in a private and peaceful location. Great for walking in the hills of Monchique and a good base for exploring the west or south coasts. Owner very helpful.
