The Experience

The eccentricity of the house (its surprising layout, its nooks and crannies, its steps up and down) seems in perfect keeping with this little riverside village. And even in August it isn’t too busy with tourists, mainly locals. Spanish on one side, Portuguese on the other. Casa Verde’s covered patio is a blissful place to be as you watch the boats float up and down; find a leafy inner courtyard too, a terrace among the rooftops, a sunbathing deck and a private plunge pool. There’s also an outdoor cinema with a good choice of DVDs.

River boating, kayaking and swimming are the activities here -and a zip wire across the river, from one country to the next! Sporty friends and families with older kids will adore it. Inside: comfortable sofas, a well-equipped kitchen and a dining room with an outdoor fire.

Fresh flowers welcome you, along with coffee, tea, oranges, wine, cake, and logs for the fire.

Casa Verde is an absolutely stunning house in the middle of the small town of Sanlucar de Guadiana. With so many different spaces both outdoors and inside it's literally possible to get lost in there! Plenty of room for bigger parties. The small pool, the outdoor shower and especially the cinema-experience under a starry sky were some of the highlights. The surrounding area provides many good hikes and runs, and the free padel court was a great bonus as well. All in all a lovely stay in a lovely place, can't recommend enough if you're looking to relax and unwind!

Thomas, Sheringham

We stayed at Casa Verde in the second week of October and the weather was perfect - not too hot, not too cold. The house itself is a gem, beautifully fitted out and cleverly laid out. I loved all the little corners I could escape to with a book; but enjoyed coming back to the big communal spaces for food and drink and chat. Sanlucar is a charming village and the zip-wire a must. It's 16 kms from the main road so feels completely cut off but is a thriving little community. We loved our stay and would recommed the beach bar in Alcoutim and the fantastic winery of Delea a Marca just 25kms away.

Graham, Staines-upon-Thames

What a fantastic break! The house is quirky (in a good way) and its location, overlooking the river, is a delight - especially at night when seated on the terrace as you have a lovely view of the lights of the small village on the opposite side. There is a zip-wire nearby (not too scary) which takes you across the river from Spain to Portugal. Sanlucar is small and picturesque but it is on the side of a hill so there is a bit of climbing, The locals are friendly. Plenty to do. Can thoroughly recommend the whole experience.

Tracey, Tunbridge Wells

Eight good friends looking to catch some late sun. Sanluca was new to us but what a find. Casa Verde was v.clean and v.tasteful. Each day began and ended, seated on the terrace, with morning coffee and sundowners, whilst taking in the breathtaking view. Eating out was so cheap but check out Remy’s general store, she has everything! Highlights: the cross-border zip-wire, a tour of Delea a Marca Vineyard (Villablanca) and our last night at the villa, watching a dvd under the stars with wine, tapas and jasmine. It was the perfect end to a great get-away. Thank you Casa Verde, we won’t forget you.

Location

The neighbourhood

You're in the heart of the charming white village of Sanlúcar de Guadiana with its cobbled alleyways and riverside jetty. The house sits in a prominent position looking across the river to the Portuguese village of Alcoutim. Borrow the owner's boat if you have a license, zip wire over, or call the 'on demand' ferry. Within a five-minute walk there are shops, a bakery and three restaurants.

Local points of interest from Val Woodhouse

  • The lovely river Guadiana which winds its way between Portugal and Spain, is always changing, always moving and is a place to dream as you bob down the river in our dinghy or in a kayak. Or go for a swim at the village pool, just a 5 minute walk away.
  • Climb up to the castle in the village for the most fantastic view, and then take the thrilling ride on the zipwire across to Portugal. Better still you arrive there 59 minutes earlier than when you left!
  • Enjoying a drink - particularly a gin and tonic (they are huge!) - at the beach bar in the village and trying some of the tasty tapas whilst watching the reflections on the water. Very cool!.
  • Staying in March and November and finding that it is so warm that a T-shirt is still enough to wear even outside at 11 o'clock at night!
  • Ambling down the river path to the finca, picking the oranges and filling a big bag, to then walk back, squeezing them to make juice and ice-cream. Very very satisfying.
  • Finding one of the many fiestas taking place in the village, watching the donkeys race through the narrow streets, barbeque of sardines and a dance with the locals. Or watch the Virgin del Carmen statue cross the river and back. That is special, indeed
