The Experience

Come for the views: you’re perched high in the mountains here and on clear days you can see the sea – 25 kms away. It’s a wonderfully ramshackle place, and these renovated holiday homes with their higgledy-piggledy terraces merge charmingly into the village. The main hub is the bar/restaurant which serves lunches and dinners of traditional Spanish food and has a lovely terrace.

Kitchens are open plan and fairly well equipped with a few basics for cooking, bedrooms are simple but comfortable, ceilings are beamed and lofty. Wander the gardens with their abundant flowers and shrubs, spread out on a big lawn, cool off in the shared pool. Children will enjoy the games room, grown ups the sauna. Practise your golf on the new dry golf course, or your yoga in the huge salon with its beautiful windowpanes.

Walking and cycling the hills around here will be challenging but the views will be your reward. Return to a sociable drink in the bar and somebody else cooking your supper.

Reviews

We discovered El Canuelo 15 years ago whilst driving around the olive groves above Periana. It was always the family’s favourite restaurant and once we got to know Edward we have been staying there in various casitas about 3 times a year since. El C seems to embrace everything we are looking for on a holiday. It’s typically Spanish but quirky and eccentric, remote and peaceful and yet has a lively social scene. The Casitas each have their individual charm and character with original artworks and artefacts. We just love it!

El Canuelo and, more exactly, Edward, the owner, have changed me! How can I allow these ten days, spent by myself and my wife in what was, for me, legendary Andalusia, pass by without expressing some hint of the deep sense of blessing that is within me? El Canuelo itself an au-point location to stay, rest and marvel. Even if you only encounter Edward through social media, you will be taken by his promptness and suggestions- where are the shops, best beaches etc? Without being at all pushy, Edward provides a safe landing. To have, as we did, his actual presence; well my stock of words doesn’t suffice. He is the most genial, humorous, discreet and open person that I’ve met in a long time. I will close by echoing a comment by Bill Bryson having first see Durham Cathedral: “Not been? Stop whatever you’re doing right now, make the booking and go!”

Chanel, Altrincham

Very nice location. View of the mountains, the lake, as far as the coast. Delicious fresh food. Friendly staff. The apartments are also beautiful and equipped with everything. An oasis of peace. Definitely come back.

El Cañuelo and its owner Edward are one of a kind. You will never find a place that matches it in its rustic charm, its views, its facilities and its golf course. You will have your very own village life, you can bring your own neighbours or get to know the people in the village house next to you. You can all practice yoga, dance or play golf and get together at its restaurant.

We keep returning to el canuelo. We love its combination of fabulous weather, gentle sociability and proximity to great cities/things to do. It is a truly fabulous place and Edward is always so welcoming, informative and helpful. We love the restaurant which is very comforting and friendly and has the most incredible views. It is the perfect place for a relaxed family holiday. Jane, Graham, Edward, Louis and Orlando

El Canuelo is a real find for those in search of a quirky, hospitable and comfortable holiday break in real Andalucia. The mood is as a drop-in, drop-out house party with congenial other guests to talk to, or not as you see fit. Self catering is a genuine option but the bar and restaurant are beguiling alternatives. The whole experience is hosted by the engaging Edward and the ever helpful Lucy. The view, the mood and the charm make it a come-back-soon place; and we shall.

Choosing to stay at El Canuelo this holiday was undoubtedly one of the best decisions I have ever made. Its utterly beautiful views and casitas astounded me, and I will CERTAINLY be making a booking here again! Just perfect.

Magnus, Salisbury

An amazing place so far off the beaten track. Like finding an oasis after a three hour walk! The views were unbelievable and we had a long lazy lunch on the terrace soaking up the sun, the view and the vino. We plan on returning this year.

Glenda, Howden

A lovely hideaway high above Lake Vinuela, so stunning views across the valley and down to the sea. You could spend hours just looking out from the balcony of the casitas. Food was excellent (large portions of delicious meat). Our kids (9 and 6) loved playing in the grounds, made great use of the pingpong table and games in the restaurant. Meeting owner Mags was an extra treat! Cold winds when we got there and the casita was a bit chilly, but nothing a lovely fire in the wood burner couldn't solve (next time we know to contact Manolo and ask him to warm it up in advance).

13 of us spent a fantastic long weekend at El Canuelo. The location is extraordinary - very beautiful with amazing views. There is lots to explore. On the Costa del Sol the small towns away from the coast are often over-looked. Comares, Alfarnate and Montefrio are all worth a visit. The accommodation has been renovated with a real artist's eye and it's spacious and comfortable. We cycled (which is amazing round there - recommend Bike2Malaga for bike hire) and were looked after by Mags, Manolo and Ana with great food and good wine. Definitely recommend for couples, families or groups

This bolt hole up the mountains is a magical place to unwind and take in the breathtaking views. For families you have an instant playground safe from traffic and small enough a community to allow children freedom to potter around the casitas making friends, playing ping pong, splashing in the pool or reading or playing cards on the restaurant terrace. Mags is the font of all knowledge who makes everybody feel cherished and whose hospitality will make you want to return. A great spot to unwind and enjoy the best of spain

Jo, Frome

Fabulous place, stunning views, good food, very friendly and helpful staff in the bar. Mags is very sociable and made us feel at home. We really enjoyed ourselves and will hope to go back soon

Marianne

A wonderful place to stay. Great views in a tranquil setting. The food in the bar is very good too.

Jude

There is a lovely calm atmosphere in this mini-village with its own bar, yummy food and a pleasant swimming pool. The accommodation is quaint and homely, and suitable for families or groups of all sizes. Its not far from Malaga airport, nor crystal clear beaches if you wanted to take a day trip. I had a wonderful relaxing trip, thank you Mags!

Evelyn

My wife and other friends and members of our family have visited and stayed at El Canuelo regularly over very many years. El Canuelo is a small hamlet of traditional Spanish Houses and casitas which were built or restored by the present owners some twenty years ago. If you are looking for a taste of rural southern Spain this is the place for you. Set around a swimming pool with a Disney style appearance and amazing views to the coast where on a clear day it is possible to just see north Africa. Adjacent is a bar and restaurant. Approximately one hour from Malaga airport. Car is essential.

Anthony

Rural Spain at its best.Wonderful views ,nice swimming pool. Lots of scope to explore Andalucia from here. .Food excellent and good local wine.

El Canuelo is very special, both in its superb location and its relaxed atmosphere that makes you feel totally at ease from the moment you arrive. Mags hosts and runs the place with natural charm, and nothing is too much trouble for Manolo as he efficiently serves up delicious local food. I have been back many times and never tire of the extraordinary view from the bar and dining terrace, so perfect with a glass of chilled white wine and a plate of tapas!!

Morwenna

We've been to El Canuelo so many times over the past 20 years that I've lost count. Each return trip provides a spectacular view down the valley and across the reservoir to Africa (on a clear day), generous hospitality and a convivial atmosphere. But there's more to the magic of Canuelo; the light shifting from gentle in the spring to a whispering summer haze, the locals, the sudden appearance of a goat, some spontaneous flamenco in the bar, happy laughter coming from adventuring children. So relaxing and, always, full of precious memories to take home.

Heidi

I have stayed at El Canuelo a couple of times over the summer months. The village is absolutely beautiful and serene - it is set up in the hills with gorgeous views over the Spanish countryside - and has a wonderfully chilled out, traditional vibe. The casitas, pool and bar offer a very simple and relaxed environment to unwind and spend time with friends and family, but if you're seeking diversion there are also a number of options for trips to nearby towns (including Malaga) and beaches galore. Mags and her family are the best hosts. I've no doubt I'll return!

Location

The neighbourhood

You'll feel on top of the world here, but not too remote. Periana is 3km for restaurants and, 2.5kms away, fascinating thermal baths - 600 metres above sea level. Zafarraya is close too with its old town and a ruined church to explore. Malaga and the coast is less than an hour in the car for great beaches, restaurants and smart shops.

Local points of interest from Edward Crawshaw

  • We are surrounded by gorgeous pueblo blanco, white villages, each one worth a wander around and a stop at the local Bar for a tapa or a lunch, a visit to the local olive oil factory, or just enjoy the fantastic old doorways!
  • The coast with its beaches and lovely seafood restaurants is just 25 minutes drive from El Canuelo. A lovely day out with the pleasure of returning up the mountain to the cooler air of El Canuelo
  • The hot springs of Alhama de Granada are well worth a visit, wander down the side of the river into the pools of hot water, springing out of the font, from deep underground. Take your swim suit and a towel! really lovely late at night under the stars.
  • Just above el Canuelo runs the old railway line, not used since the 50's, along it you can walk, run, cycle or horseback ride taking in the spectacular views whilst enjoying the solitude of the area. In the summer months you'll see groups of bee eaters .
  • For Birdwatchers the Golden Oriole, Hoopoe, Bee Eaters, Eagles, Vultures and Chough being regularly seen. The wild Mountain goats can also be seen at certain times en route to greener pastures, passing the cave of Zafarraya Neanderthal man
  • El Canuelo is a very good base for visiting four great 'must see' places in Southern Spain, Malaga, Seville, Cordoba and Granada. Don't let life slip by without visiting each of them!
