The Experience

An ancient defence tower is the centrepiece of this super-smart modern rural hotel; it blends beautifully into untamed countryside just two miles from the sea, where open farmland turns to olive and fruit orchards. Inside is a mix of stylish rustic and sophisticated modern with natural colours, stone walls and marble floors.

Bedrooms and bathrooms are lavish in a minimalist way – the one on the ground floor has its own terrace. Wake to homemade jams, cheeses, Spanish omelettes, fresh fruit. Dinner is in the Mallorquin cooking style using their own organic produce as much as possible and served with many local wines.

Set off to discover the nearby Caves of Artà, or stay put: relaxation is taken seriously here. Sink into pumpkin-coloured cushions on the terrace, cosy up in the tower sitting room, whet your whistle in a smart little bar or just lounge by the pool. Bring back homegrown almonds and olive oil as a reminder of your stay.

Location

The neighbourhood

A stone's throw from beaches yet the feeling is utterly remote. Walk straight into the Llevant Nature Reserve for hiking, birdwatching and swimming in hidden coves. Capdepera is 5km for shops, cafés, a medieval castle and a Gothic church – a weekly market too. Artà is 10km – an ancient hilltop town with evening markets and good restaurants. Take a boat trip from Cala Ratjada, eat at Il Ministro.
