The Experience
This 12th-century rectory is set next to a Romanic church on Garrotxa’s volcanic western fringe, and it’s said that when the doors swung open again after a meticulous restoration the locals were moved to tears.
Roy and Goretti, a Scottish chef and a Catalan whisky expert, have revived chunky oak beams, made bed heads from doors, lamp stands from wine kegs. Leather armchairs sprawl by the fire and a garden terrace catches sunshine and birdsong. Rustic-chic bedrooms flaunt their history: patterned tiles, a stone basin, translucent pictures in tiny bathroom windows.
Breakfast on cheese, artisanal cured meats, fruit, cereals, home-made jams and marmalade; eggs as you like them on request too. For dinner, local beef with wild mushrooms, homegrown raspberries with hazelnut meringue, Catalan wine… a feast to savour after exploring spectacular volcanic landscapes (by foot or hot air balloon), or cycling the Via Verde to Olot and its surrounding valleys

Our stay here was simply perfect. We enjoyed a 7 night stay and we were extremely well catered for. The accommodation is simple but perfectly adequate. Good sized bed with crisp bedding, large shower and lots of other seating areas elsewhere to relax. The breakfasts were lovely, Goretti serves the continental breakfast with a smile. The evening meals are fabulous, Roy catered for all dietary requirements and produced first class three courses every night during our 7 night stay. The situation of La Rectoria is great for cycling, lots of quiet roads and some challenging terrain.

We stayed at La Rectoria for 3 nights and felt very relaxed. Roy and Goretti are excellent hosts. The location is beautiful, the rooms comfortable and the food is first class. There are plenty of placed to sit and relax and we enjoyed cooling off in the pool. Thank you Roy and Goretti for a truly memorable start to our holiday. We hope to come again.

Roy and Goretti are great hosts making us so welcome and we thoroughly enjoyed our stopover! The rectory has been lovingly restored and still retains a lot of the original features like the cooking facilities enjoyed by the priests of the past, the wonderful uneven wood flooring in the huge entrance and the beams! We enjoyed sitting by the wood burning stove reading - so relaxing. Good food, comfortable rooms - enjoy it.

Location
The neighbourhood
La Rectoria is located in the natural park of La Garrtoxa and surrounded by oak trees. The nearest village, Sant Feliu de Pallerols, is five minutes by car or 40 minutes’ walk, and has a restaurant, bar and a couple of cafes, as well as a bakery and supermarket. Olot, 14 km away, has a wider range of shops and restaurants, including two with Michelin stars, as well as museums.
Local points of interest from Roy Lawson
- Take a brisk walk through the heart of the La Garrotxa Volcanic Natural Park, a 10km hike in the verdant wooded volcanic landscape which takes in the volcano Santa Margarida with its chapel nestling in its crater and the quarried remains of El Croscat.
- Stroll through and immerse yourself in the peace and quiet of Fageda d'en Jordà, the beech forest made famous through the poetry of the Catalan Joan Maragall. A cathedral of green in spring & summer and temple of ocres in the autumn.
- The medieval towns of Sant Joan les Fonts, Besalú & Santa Pau have some of the best examples of romanesque monasteries, churches & squares in Catalonia. And Besalú has the only example of a Jewish purification bath, 'Mikvah' in Spain.
- Alta Garrotxa offers the paradigm of 'Garrotxa' - rough, uneven land. Its deep limestone valleys and sheer cliffs are covered with holm oak forests and dotted with small farms & hamlets. This mountainous area is criss-crossed with well signposted footpaths
- The food & cuisine of La Garrotxa fits all budgets from 10€ lunch menus to 1 & 2 Michelin star restaurants. 'Mar i Muntanya' (original surf & turf), Patates d'Olot or 'Miel i Mato' along with artisan cheeses, cured meats and mushrooms.
- Cycling for all! From the most challenging road cycling routes, mountain biking, touring holidays by bike or recreational family cycling. La Rectoria sits on the Olot-Girona 'Via Verde' Greenway a 100km cycle path that finishes on the Costa Brava.

Introducing
Roy Lawson
Maria and Roy met 20 years ago in Edinburgh while working in a five-star hotel. They married in 2002, had a son in 2005 and moved to Spain to open the La Rectoria in 2011
Another fabulous stay with Goretti and Roy. Such a warm welcome and the true meaning of service with a smile. The accommodation is very welcoming and comfortable. Breakfasts are so good with the option of cooked eggs etc. evening meals are created by Roy and are excellent. Great location for cycling and walking as the surrounding area is beautiful and natural with nature galore. I wouldn’t hesitate in recommending and will certainly be visiting again.
