The Experience

Deep in rural Extremadura, a 19th-century wine press – spot the original stone press in the living room where grapes were crushed by foot – has been gracefully transformed into an elegant five bedroom guesthouse. You’ll feel serene here in big airy rooms, each with their own living spaces, and fine views out of every window to almond, olive and citrus trees that dot the eight hectares of gardens.

Breakfasts (and dinner if you pre-book) are packed with fresh produce from the olive groves and productive veg garden: tomatoes, olive oil, homemade marmalade and cakes, freshly squeezed juice. You eat under the sun-dappled pergola where you can linger over coffee before slinking down to the pool with a good book. Easy to stay put but there are bikes to borrow and walks from the door.

Stroll 15 minutes to a small bar for tapas or paella, otherwise it’s a drive to interesting towns – Mérida, Cáceres and Trujillo are all within easy reach.

Reviews

Beautifully decorated in keeping with its traditional architecture. This place has a peaceful soul. El Azahar is in a peaceful setting in the middle of the countryside, with its olive groves and vineyard and the most pure skies. We stayed for 3 nights and despite the torrential rain we are determent to come back. Strategically situated to visit the medieval cities of Cáceres and Trujillo as well as Guadalupe. Laura, the housekeeper couldn’t be nicer. A fantastic place with a fantastic team looking after it. We loved it!

Pilar, Gloucestershire

For people who love to see traditional inland Spain, not just the countryside and rural communities but also its architecture and people, a slice of how things used to be. Finca El Azahar will whisk you away from our busy, on demand lives to a slower pace of living. Space to breath, smell, taste and hear again is essential and this place will flourish all of those senses.

Location

The neighbourhood

The medieval city of Trujillo is a 10-minute drive, a perfectly preserved mix of palatial houses and ancient squares, set on a hill overlooking rolling countryside – so perfect it's been used as a film set for Game of Thrones. Equally lovely Cáceres is a 40-minute drive and stunning Mérida (30 minutes) with its fine aqueduct is a must see. Monfragüe National Park is an hour by car.
