Through fine high iron gates and over farmland with cattle grids is a well-proportioned 1800 house behind a low hedge – unspoiled and charming. Inside is an Aladdin's cave: walk into a wide hall with a black and white tiled floor and a comfortingly ticking grandfather clock. The red dining room has an open fire and there's another in the handsome drawing room. Most of the furniture is from the early 19th century, some brought back from India by Colonel John Macnamara whose picture hangs in the drawing room; a rare Steinway pianola from 1916 has been refurbished and there are fascinating original ordnance survey maps of the county. The kitchen is perfectly kitted out with an Aga and a smart cooker and you eat at a solid pine table. Sumptuous bedrooms (two on the ground floor) are named with porcelain plaques by a local artist; colours are soft, cotton is crisp and bathrooms are large. Wander through the new organic vegetable garden, discover a playhouse for children, lots of space for running around, great walking and fishing. Kathleen, the property manager, is on hand to help if needed.
