The Experience

Picturesque Gorey sits at the foot of the castle with views that stretch across the bay – watch the twelve-metre tide surge and ebb in an ever-changing vista. Inside is extremely comfortable. If it’s pouring with rain you can take a book to the fireside, slowly sip a barrel-aged house negroni, then take a long lazy lunch in the restaurant. Yoga and pilates sessions run regularly in the tranquil studio or out on the terrace in good weather.

Bedrooms, some with a balcony, have local art on the walls, Nespresso machines and bay or castle views. Wake to ‘Scandi’ breakfasts: Norwegian crisp breads, meat and cheese platters, smashed avocado, poached eggs and their own smoked salmon with plenty of vegan options too. There are two separate menus for the bar and the restaurant but both are from the finest local ingredients and are simply prepared so the flavours can shine.

Set off to explore the coastline on foot or hire an electric bike from the hotel.

Reviews

The Moorings is situated in a spectacular location and if you get the chance to visit Jersey, it is the most wonderful place to situate yourself for a fantastic long weekend (or week) away. The Moorings is equally loved (and frequented) by locals for its fabulous food, sunny harbourside terrace, and yoga/pilates classes. Iselin and Matt are wonderful hosts; welcoming, warm and friendly.

Location

The neighbourhood

It's easy to get about on foot and explore the area. Start with the castle then branch out onto many walking paths. Spot oyster catchers and white egrets, team up with Jersey Kayak Adventures and explore the eastern coastline. On a high tide you can see big bass in the shallows next to the sea wall. Catch the bus to St Helier for the Central Market - it's beautifully authentic and old-fashioned.

Local points of interest from Matthew & Iselin Jones

  • Gerald Durrell celebrated his 50th birthday here. Also visited by David Niven, Chay Blythe and Susan Hampshire.
  • The Moorings was first registered as a Hotel in the 1851 Census, when it was The British Hotel. It has been known as The Moorings since the 1950s.
  • There's a locals swimming spot at the end of the Pier behind the wall, where you can always swim, whatever the tide. Jersey has the third biggest tidal range in the world at over 12 meters. Follow the tide out and walk amongst the oyster beds.
  • We have a yoga and Pilates studio on site- a new lease of life for what was a very old and dated residents lounge!
  • France is just an hour away, if you fancy a day trip to St Malo to sample the best of Brittany! Or stay closer to home with rib trips, visiting the island's outlying reefs, where dolphin and seal spotting is a regular occurrence.
  • Jersey's most iconic historic landmark, Mont Orgueil, sits right above our head!

Introducing

Matthew & Iselin Jones

Matthew has worked for many years in hospitality and was born and bred on the island. His wife, Iselin is Norwegian and has a background in TV journalism and law. They've worked very hard to breathe new life into what was a dark and dated place. They've kept many of the original features and given it a mega facelift. You'll see them and their two children bustling about - they are very friendly.
