The Experience

Charles II may have stayed, and his bedroom has changed little… Off a busy street yet an ancient dream of a manor house, David’s home is a dramatic trove of antiques, art, rich colour, grand piano, rose carvings, gorgeous bedrooms – be swept along by his enthusiasm and generosity, marvel at the attention to detail. Breakfast is served in the magnificent Tudor dining room at one long table: continental with compotes and yogurt, home-baking, tea in heirloom china. A pretty garden, guided local tours… hop on a train from St Pancras and arrive in time for drinks.

Reviews

Jo, Surbiton

Sorry for the late feedback, I really really recommend this place. So beautiful, well kept, amazing breakfast. The dining table is beautifully set. Wonderful antiques around the place, most comfortable bed I have ever slept in. The host David was really amazing, it was fantastic to hear about the history of the place and an introduction to some of the antiques. David is an excellent host and nothing was too much trouble for him. Stay here!!!

Jacqueline, Dublin

We enjoyed a very brief, but fantastic stay at Harlington Manor while en route to a wedding. David is a wonderful host; nothing was too much trouble. We arrived fairly late on the Friday night and he even ran to the local pub to let them know we were on our way so the kitchen didn't close! The house is exquisite - we just wished we had more time to explore it and the stunning gardens. Also, we would have been more than delighted to have been able to spend a second night in the extremely comfy bed! Breakfast was delicious and kept us going all day. We'd love to stay again!

Patricia, York

Definitely one of the best Sawday places we have stayed in. Fascinating house and charming host.

Sue, Bexleyheath, Kent

Four of us missed our flight from Gatwick, the next available flight was from Luton so to be on the safe side we decided to travel to Luton and stay near the airport overnight. We found Harlington Manor who luckily had two double rooms available and what a find. David is a fantastic host who made us feel extremely welcome he was so interesting and entertaining to talk to. The property has beautiful gardens, the rooms and facilities are spacious and very comfortable, we wished we could have stayed a bit longer and will definitely be back. This really is a very special place to stay.

Local points of interest from David Blakeman

  • The house dates from the late 14th century, though it has Tudor, Jacobean, Georgian, Victorian and 1930's extensions and alterations! The Great and Little Parlours have magnificent Jacobean panelling.
  • John Bunyan was interrogated and briefly imprisoned here, in 1660, by the then owner, Sir Francis Wingate. Charles II is said to have stayed in the King Charles Bedroom shortly afterwards. There is a long established tale of a ghost!
  • We're only 5 minutes walk from Harlington mainline station. Trains go very frequently (15 minutes at peak), stopping at St Pancras International (and on to the Continent), Farringdon and Blackfriars (for Tate Modern and the Globe.
  • The house is only 6 miles from Woburn Abbey, golf course and safari park. Bicester Village is 38 miles away, Cambridge just 1 hour's drive. Milton Keynes (with its snowdome, theatre and shopping) is just 20 minutes drive away.
  • The house abuts an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty-which extends all the way to Hitchin, 9 miles away. The National Trust have extensive local landholdings-including the Sundon Hills Country Park, an easy walk away and the Barton Hills National Reserve.
  • Harlington was the venue for the World's first steeplechase-which ran from the Carpenter's Arms, one of two local pubs. It has numerous half timbered buildings and a 13th century church.
