The Experience

Originally the Smithy for the Okel Tor Mining Company, this dear little house has been nicely renovated. You’re kept cosy with double glazing and a wood-burning stove, there is plenty of squishy seating and the tiny kitchen has some basics for cooking and all the kit you need to make supper. You’ll also find some local snacks waiting for you.

You can sit on the covered veranda to read a book even when it’s raining and the views are stupendous – early morning river mist will be romantic, and don’t forget binoculars as the birdlife is pretty spectacular too. The calming bedroom has a super-comfy bed and good linen and you can see that view through the window. Join public footpaths down through the woods to the river; a short walk will take you into the village or to a couple of pubs.

This is the place to come if you want to paint, write, enjoy nature and the river. Or simply to be alone with your beloved – and your dog.

Reviews

The Smithy, now a place of utter tranquillity and birdsong, was once a place of noise and industry and there are little decorative reminders of its mining heritage dotted all around it. The morning river mist and the ever-shifting seasonal panorama of the woodland are gentle on the eye and ear. Wind down in this cosy little cottage and from it, explore the quirky village of Calstock and beyond.

Absolutely wonderful stay at The Smithy. The owners are wonderful and attentive. The cottage is beautiful and cosy with everything you would need. Our dog has an amazing time and it's the perfect peaceful getaway. Highly recommend and we will definitely be back again!

Jocelyn and Chris, Ipswich

We loved The Smithy. Such a beautiful location overlooking the Tamar. Lovely walks from cottage and very accessible for Dartmoor walks. The cottage was so warm and cosy and equipped with everything we needed. Jon and Jenny were brilliant hosts and gave top tips on places to go and good places to eat. Everything was perfect for a restful week with some exciting weather conditions thrown in. Thank you!

Claire, Dorchester

We stayed at the Smithy for the second time, the first being 9 years ago. Okel Tor mine is such a magical place and had hardly altered , despite the change of owner. The cottage is very comfortable and cosy and well equipped. A new shower room was about to be fitted. The setting is wonderful with lovely views and walks from the front door. The walk to Cothele house , stopping at Calstock for a look at art galleries and a coffee, is really lovely. Jon is very friendly and helpful and involved in local events. A great stay in a Sawdays place as always.

Dawn and Tim

Our return visit to the Smithy did not disappoint. A beautiful location, lovely walks from the door. A great place to unwind with a very helpful host.

Location

The neighbourhood

You're on the outskirts (a 15 to 20-minute walk) from the quirky, picturesque, riverside village of Calstock. The village has pubs, a café, a small art gallery/shop, an amazing ice cream shop and an active village community. The river is focal to the village and there are boat trips up and down the Tamar to Plymouth. The Boot Inn and The Tamar Inn are less than a mile away from the cottage.

Local points of interest from Jon & Jenny Tully

  • Nature and heritage entwined in a unique setting. Explore the woodland and riverside paths and archaeological remains. Experience the tranquillity, sweeping views across the river and dark night sky. Perhaps sketch or paint, or simply relax with a book.
  • Enjoy a complimentary guided tour of the ruined mine buildings, including the most interesting archaeological features on the 16-acre site and an explanation of the mine’s history. Just ask when making your booking or on arrival.
  • Celebrate your 10th (tin) anniversary in a Cornish tin mine! Each cottage has been carefully restored, tastefully decorated and fitted with a log burning stove to create a comfortable and cosy retreat, perfect for a couple seeking a romantic break.
  • The National Trust's Cotehele is a short walk along the river - a medieval house with gardens spilling down to an historic quay where you can enjoy a cream tea or ice cream. National Trust properties Buckland Abbey, Anthony and Lanhydrock are also nearby.
  • Great walking. The Tamara Way coast-to-coast path passes right through Okel Tor Mine and the spectacular views from Kit Hill are nearby too. Dartmoor and Bodmin Moor are less than 30 minutes’ drive and lovely Cornish beaches not much further.
  • The local area really is “Beyond Paradise”! Explore nearby locations for the famous TV series, which include Calstock, Pentillie Estate and Looe. Or take a train on the Tamar Valley branch line to Plymouth & catch the ferry back to Calstock.
