The Experience

The drive from the main road is stunning: narrow, twisty and with wide sensational views at every turn; you are in the quietest valley but still at 1,200 feet. Your cottage, like any well-loved family home, is crammed with original art, photographs, books, games, open fires – plenty to keep young and old happy. The kitchen is big, beamed and Aga-simmered; a squishy sofa at one end next to an overflowing bookcase ensures whoever cooks will have company. You’ll find a homemade cake and a bottle of prosecco to launch you into holiday mode.

Views soar through every window over the stunning hills, beckoning you outdoors, but if it’s raining it’ll be lovely to snuggle in with a book beside the open fire in the long sitting room. Comfortable bedrooms have equally lovely views.

Wander your own woodland, walk straight onto the fell from the cottage to Helvellyn, the Dodds and Gowbarrow, walk 15 minutes into Dockray for good pub food.

Reviews

A 'get away from it all' place. It’s idyllic – peaceful, quiet and a heavenly rural and wild position – in a remote part of the Lakes. Perfect for walking from the door and never going near a car!

Kate, High Wycombe

We have successfully taken advantage of the sun, mist, wind and rain to manage a sail, a long hike up Great Dodd and enjoy the house, cows, nesting swallows (in particular) and rather too much cake (supplemented by additional trips to the Honesty Box Bakes). Loved the isolation and wind and discovering a little hidden valley so conveniently close to Ullswater. Thank you so much for the friendly welcome and hospitality. Lucy's Wood was beautiful. As are the paintings.

Sue, Kent

The cottage is absolutely wonderful and the location magical. We had the perfect stay and would love to return. We were greeted with a homemade cake, homemade marmalade, sparkling wine and dog treats for our labrador. I cannot recommend Crookwarth cottage highly enough.

James, Surrey

Thank you for a wonderful stay - what a peaceful and beautiful place. The cottage is cosy and we felt at home here, we are sorry to leave. Plenty of great walks and new summits climbed. In 40 odd years of coming to the Lakes this week has been perhaps the best we've ever had with the weather.

Clare, Worcestershire

Crookwath Cottage, Lucy's Wood and the surrounding area has delivered on every level. We have been given a 'hug' from this homely and peaceful corner of the Lakes and can' wait to come back next year. Thank you Carla and Will

Location

The neighbourhood

You're at the head of the remote valley. Nature lovers, photographers and wildlife seekers will be in their element. Lake District activities abound with Penrith 20 minutes away and the Rheged centre, on the A66, with galleries, exhibitions, cinema and shops selling local produce. Hop on an Ullswater Steamer to get your bearings from the water, wild swim, paddle board or wander the woodlands.

Local points of interest from Will & Carla

  • Walk straight onto the fell from Crookwath. Many walks from the doorstep, Helvellyn, the Dodds, Gowbarrow, Birket Fell and our own private 25 acre woodland with the Aira Beck flowing through it and 15min walk onto the Royal Hotel for great food and drinks.
  • BBQ in Lucys Wood overlooking our ponds and Gowbarrow Fells, chill with sounds of water and birdsong all around you...midday is best when the Barn gets all the south facing sun.
  • Keswick's bustling saturday street market offers wide range of local foods, cheeses, organic meat and veg. Great art galleries and outdoor shops to explore in all weathers.
  • Fell horse riding, fishing with Hemmingways, quad biking available, only 2 miles from Crookwath cottage.
  • A Gem - Theatre by the Lake offers great entertainment in Keswick throughout the year, including Mountain Film Festival.
  • Ullswater is close by with many wild swimming spots, sailing, the Ullswater steamers, trail running and beautiful walks around the shores.
