The Experience
Beautifully renovated, this former toll house once charged farmers driving sheep to market. Today, it brims with country charm: thick stone walls, wooden beams and fell views from every window that make even the washing up a pleasure.
Stylish interiors add warmth and cosiness – the sitting and dining rooms glow with firelight, while the well-equipped farmhouse kitchen is a happy spot for rustling up meals. Tuck into a hamper of homemade sourdough and award-winning marmalade, then stock up on local produce in Kirkby Stephen. When you fancy a night off, welcoming pubs are near.
You’re in a rugged, remote corner of the Yorkshire Dales where the river Eden begins. Climb Mallerstang Edge or Wild Boar Fell, walk for hours without seeing a soul, only red squirrels, roe deer, kestrels, butterflies… Return for a garden sauna and cold shower, then a deep sleep in one of three comfortable bedrooms.

Location
The neighbourhood
Serious walkers and cyclists will adore it here in the Mallerstang Valley. Touch history on a visit to 12th-century Pendragon Castle. Tackle part of Lady Anne's Way (a 100-mile route from Skipton to Penrith) or the Pennine Bridleway. Heave yourselves up mighty fells, over viaducts and waterfalls. Recover with a drink in a friendly local pub – there are heaps to choose from.
Local points of interest from Peter & Amanda Jaques-Walker
- Stroll over to Pendragon Castle (a ten minute walk away), which dates back to the 12th century, for a picnic amongst the ruins.
- Wild swim in one of the local swimming spots, for example at Uldale Force.
- Drive through the beautiful Mallerstang valley to Hawes, and a visit to the Wensleydale Creamery.
- Drive (or cycle, if you are keen!) up to the Tan Hill Inn - the highest pub in the UK - for lunch.
- Walk up Wild Boar Fell or along Mallerstang Edge.
- Location - set within the beautiful Mallerstang valley within the Yorkshire Dales.

Peter & Amanda Jaques-Walker
Peter and Amanda moved to Cumbria from London in 2016 and are young, friendly, knowledgeable and brilliant at hosting. They live in an apartment at Brownber, so always on hand if you need them at the House or Hall and only a few miles down the road if you're staying at Gatehouse which is owned and designed by Amanda's sister, Georgina.
