The Experience

Hidden up a private lane is this 18th-century gem, filled with history and with views over romantic fells and farmland. Interiors are decidedly pretty and homely – the antidote to swish Ikea-filled holiday homes, and a joy for larger groups with much space. Children can safely wander in and out, grown-ups will adore the comfy sofas and chairs by the wood-burner – plus a big TV for rainy days – and real cooks will appreciate the roomy kitchen with all its gear for big meals. You can order delicious grass-fed beef from the farm too.

Eat elegantly by candlelight in the dining room, or on the terrace in the sun. Swim in the lake, wander to Aira Force, join the Ullswater loop or tackle some climbing. Return to a handy boot room with extra shower to clean up.

View-filled bedrooms (one double en suite, one double and a bunk room sharing a family bathroom and a triple with an en suite loo and basin) are fresh and light-filled. Restful.

Reviews

This is a fabulous place! You feel really lucky to be on a real Cumbrian farm, quite well known for developing ethical and regenerative farming practices. The house is so full of history, and yet is absolutely beautiful. Fabulous decor, quirky art and spotless. You cannot but have a fabulous holiday here.

Location

The neighbourhood

Apart from watery fun on the lake (paddle boarding, boat trips and kayaking), there are oodles of gentle (and tougher) walks from the door. This is a quieter part of the Lakes but it's not remote – nearby you'll find plenty of pubs, coffee shops and village stores selling almost everything. Penrith is 20 minutes for the Thursday market and lots of outdoor clothing shops. Spend a day in Keswick.

Local points of interest from Anne Lloyd

  • We're situated above Ullswater – arguably England's most beautiful lake.
  • The Ullswater Way – we're located on this 22-mile circular walking route around the Ullswater Valley. Broken down into four convenient sections, walk part or walk it all – whatever you choose it's not to be missed.
  • We're part of a nature-friendly, working farm. Make sure to request a farm tour during your stay.
  • Visit pretty Pooley Bridge on the north shore of Ullswater, a 10-minute drive. Discover riverside pubs, an independent bookshop and a gin shop stocking over 400 gins!
  • Take a cruise on the iconic Ullswater 'Steamers' – from the rolling fells at the northern end to dramatic drops as you approach Glenridding in the south, it's the best way to experience the valley.
  • Use Gowbarrow Old Hall as a base to discover the wider Lake District and the county of Cumbria. Strike out for the quieter Eden Valley or head into the tourist hotspots of Ambleside and Windermere and get your fill of William Wordsworth and Beatrix Potter.
