The
Experience
You are ensconced in the quieter part of the Lakes and have independence in this Elizabethan manor. Once a fortified Pele tower, it’s a fascinating historic house yet very much a lived-in family home with a wonderful atmosphere. The airy suites have a sitting room each with books, children’s videos, squashy sofas, pretty fabrics and whitewashed walls. Beds have patchwork quilts, windows have stone mullions and all is peaceful. Henry gives you sturdy breakfasts, and you can join him and Anna for convivial home-grown suppers by a roaring fire in the great hall. Children will have fun: hens and pigs to feed, garden toys galore and woods to roam.

We thoroughly enjoyed staying in the comfort of Kelly Suite at Johnby Hall. Henry and Anna are very welcoming, including to Baileydog. The location makes it a sumptuous stop off if en route north or south and is a great base from which to explore the northern Lakes.

We loved it here. Henry and Anna are delightful and welcoming hosts and the house is amazing! The rooms truly unique and Elzabethan with history oozing from everywhere you look - and all in a quieter area of the Lakes. Our dogs loved it too - and were made to feel very welcome! Simply perfect! We will be back....!

Location
The neighbourhood
Local points of interest from Henry & Anna Howard
- Would you like to stay somewhere where the breakfast bacon and sausages come from free range rare breed pigs in the paddock, and the eggs from the chickens roaming the garden, with jams and marmalades made from our own produce? Look no further!
- Would you like to stay somewhere where young children and dogs aren't just allowed but are welcomed? Our own young children Nicholas and Lucy love making friends with visitors, both two and four-footed!
- Would you like to stay somewhere with a garden whose history goes back centuries, with a walled orchard, an utterly tranquil location and views over to the Pennines and Lakeland fells? Our garden is a haven for birdlife and red squirrels too!
- If you can tear yourself away, the local village, Greystoke, has a great pub; the Lake District and Eden Valley are just down the road, and there are easy day trips to the Yorkshire Dales, Hadrian's Wall, the North Pennines AONB and into Scotland.
- We're handy for the increasingly popular local events such as the world-famous Dalemain Marmalade Festival; PotFest in the Pens and the Park; Hutton-in-the-Forest Horse Trials, and the Lakes Chilli Fest - all within 5 or 6 miles.
- We're only 10-15 minutes from the M6 (junction 40 or 41) so if you're heading to the Highlands or taking the high road to England we're a perfect stopping-off point! We're just off the coast-to-coast cycle path too.
