The Experience

Basking in views of the Howgill Fells, this Victorian schoolhouse has been thoughtfully converted into an inviting home. Children will love the big lawn and playhouse, and the snug is kitted out with books and games for wet days.

Gather round the big wooden dining table, handmade by carpenter Jonny, for a hearty meal straight from the state-of-the-art range – beams overhead, slates underfoot and everything you need for cooking with friends or family. The master bedroom has an en suite shower and room for a cot, another has views of Cautley Spout Waterfall and a third is cosily nestled in the eaves.

Come for peace and country air; curlews calling in spring, red squirrel spotting in the woods. Walkers will be in their element, with Winder Fell, Wild Boar Fell and a walk to Cautley Spout all very close, and the Lake District a short drive. Work up an appetite for lunch at one of the excellent pubs in beautiful Sedbergh.

Location

The neighbourhood

With views across to the towering fells and just a few other house dotted here and there, this is open country. There are plenty of good local pubs – the excellent Black Bull and Dalesman are both in Sedbergh, which also has a butcher, greengrocer and independent shops. The historic towns of Kendal, Kirkby Stephen and Kirkby Lonsdale are all 30 mins' drive, as is the nearest station.

Local points of interest from Mary & Jonny Briggs

  • Fell Walks: Winder, Cautley Spout waterfall and Wild Boar fell are all within 3 miles and are fantastic fell walks in the Howgills. Lake District within easy reach for day trips and bigger mountains!

  • Pubs: The Dalesman and the (award-winning) Black Bull inSedbergh are fantastic pubs. In Ravenstonedale there is theKing's Head and the Black Swan too.
  • Cafés: The Three Hares and the Mug Story in Sedbergh serve fantastic coffee, pastries and have sourdough bakeries.
  • Farfield Mill: Shop, café, museum, galleries and independent craftspeople selling their hand-woven/knitted wares. Day courses available in a range of artistic disciplines.
  • Historic Days Out: Sizergh Castle, Lowther Castle, Pendragon Castle, Holker Hall, Levens Hall. Something for everyone: kids' activities, stunning gardens, fascinating buildings, great walks.

Introducing

Mary & Jonny Briggs

Owners Mary and Jonny have lovingly restored this former Victorian schoolhouse, exposing the original stone and cleverly mirroring the roofline with a smart timber-clad extension. Carpenter Jonny has spent many hours and much skill here, he hand built the kitchen and dining room table. Mary’s eye for beautiful fabrics and intriguing art give it character.
