The Experience
Country lovers will feel at home at this just-renovated barn, on a working farm in walking country – as will families with young children. The two storeys where farmer and sheep were housed and hay and wool kept dry, have become a large, light and airy open-plan space, with soft white walls and new oak floors. Bedrooms and bathrooms are downstairs, off a limestone floor’d hall; the living area is under the vaulted ceiling above. There are velux windows in the roof, as well as large deep-silled ones, and views on every side of hills sprinkled with sheep. There’s a wood-burner in the chimney breast, the furniture is solid and new, the kitchen gleams with black granite and steel, the bedrooms have fresh flowers and top quality everything, and the bathrooms, smartly tiled from floor to ceiling, have soaps and shampoo from the Sedbergh Soap Company. Logs and a generous welcome pack of award-winning local produce are on the house, and Rachel, who loves to meet and greet, is full of plans for courses, from cookery to dry stone walling. The garden has oak furniture, wood-fired hot tub, a fire pit and BBQ – at the end you’ll find a rope swing.

This has rapidly and well deservedly become our favourite family holiday destination with both children aged 7 and 5 repeatedly asking to return. So brilliant we initially stayed in November and returned in February. The welcome from Andrew and Rachael is fantastic. We watched a calf being born, and the children have blown dried calves, and even had 2 new born calves named after them, whose progress they still follow by email. Combine this with a luxurious cottage, and fantastic bike rides, walks and a steam railway on the door and you have a recipe for a contented family! See you again soon!

- Take one of the worlds greatest railway journeys.... The Settle - Carlisle Railway. Located just a short walk through our fields is Kirkby Stephen railway station, from here you can plan rides and walks through the stunning countryside.
- If you like walking, but don't like the crowds, then this is the place for you! Plenty of walks right from your front doorstep as recently featured in The Country Walking Magazine. Wild Boar Fell, Nine Standards, Lady Anne's Way and Smardale Nature reserve.
- If you need the children to let off some steam there are acres of green fields and great places to visit. Lowther Castle and Raby Castle both have amazing adventure playgrounds for the young one with cafes onsite and lots to explore within the grounds.
- Cumbria has some of the best restaurants in the country with local produce always on the menu. Just 2 miles up the road is The Black Swan with award winning food and a well stocked bar. Booking is essential.

What an amazing barn........right in the middle of the most amazing countryside! Brilliant interior design by Rachel. A large open living space and lovely ensuite bedrooms with big comfy beds. There's loads to do around here as it's right between the Lakes and the Dales, but you could just stay local. Kirby Stephen is a great little place. Well done to the lovely Marston Family, your barn is perfect!
