The Experience

Country lovers will feel at home at this just-renovated barn, on a working farm in walking country – as will families with young children. The two storeys where farmer and sheep were housed and hay and wool kept dry, have become a large, light and airy open-plan space, with soft white walls and new oak floors. Bedrooms and bathrooms are downstairs, off a limestone floor’d hall; the living area is under the vaulted ceiling above. There are velux windows in the roof, as well as large deep-silled ones, and views on every side of hills sprinkled with sheep. There’s a wood-burner in the chimney breast, the furniture is solid and new, the kitchen gleams with black granite and steel, the bedrooms have fresh flowers and top quality everything, and the bathrooms, smartly tiled from floor to ceiling, have soaps and shampoo from the Sedbergh Soap Company. Logs and a generous welcome pack of award-winning local produce are on the house, and Rachel, who loves to meet and greet, is full of plans for courses, from cookery to dry stone walling. The garden has oak furniture, wood-fired hot tub, a fire pit and BBQ – at the end you’ll find a rope swing.

Reviews

Our two weeks in this lovely barn flew by. The bedrooms were super cosy, the bathrooms were elegant and we spent lots of great family time upstairs in the lounge and dining areas. There were so many special attentions like fresh country flowers in each room, local toileteries and a hamper of tasty regional produce. The views from the barn are wonderful and time in the garden and hot tub was ever so relaxing. There is so much to do in the area in terms of hikes and places to visit. One of our best moments was spending time with the welcoming owners as they worked with their sheep and cows.

A truly stunning holiday cottage tastefully converted with all the luxuries to make it a home from home stay. The cottage is ideally located on a working farm with amenities within a short drive. The owners and family are always so happy and accommodating. this is an amazing magical place where you can immerse your self in the peace and tranquility or get stuck in helping on the farm. The cottage and the surroundings set you up for a wonderful experience but the attention to detail and the extra little touches make your visit extra special. This is where the family memories will be made.

A gorgeous cottage in a wonderful setting. The owner is more than happy to take time with the children introducing them to the lambs. The accommodation is exceptionally clean and well appointed, with a lovely log fire and snug. All bedrooms are en-suite and we have already booked our return!

This was our 3rd holiday to Stay Lambing Live and already can’t wait for our 4th! The cottage is beautiful, comfy & cosy especially with the log fire going. The Marstens are such great hosts and a pleasure to spend time with. We all love getting stuck in with any jobs on the farm, particularly this last visit during lambing season where we had the unforgettable experience of delivering lambs and bottle feeding them. We honestly can’t recommend the holiday enough (the only worry is more people find out about it and we can’t get booked in!!)

Beautiful converted barn in a stunning location overlooking the hills. Warm underfloor heating, cosy fires & plenty of space for a family of 5. Delicious food hamper on arrival, Rachel & family were so friendly & welcoming. Our 7 & 5 year old loved to help feed the sheep & cows. The hot tub including stargazing was magical. A fantastic walk along a disused railway crossing two viaducts is very near the property & perfect for a pushchair. Ullswater (Lake District) was easily accessible by car (40 min journey). A delicious roast lunch at the Black Swan Hotel in Ravenstonedale, highly recommend!

Fabulous! Friendly kind owners who despite running a busy farm happy to chat and give local knowledge always with a smile. We were provided with a super luxury hamper of local products. Beautifully appointed accommodation, views magnificent whatever the weather. Lovely walks direct from the door and a great base to explore further afield.

This is a lovey converted barn. We really enjoyed our stay. It is well equipped and very comfortable and warm. It was a treat to be able to view the working farm from the property. We have a small baby and there were some local pushchair friendly disused railway walks nearby. We hope to return one day during lambing season when our daughter is older.

What a fabulous place to stay! The cottage is lovely. We loved the views of sheep from the window, scrumptious welcome pack on arrival, luxurious rooms and ensuites and spectacular walks on the doorstep. The Fat Lamb pub nearby is a must and Brysons in Kirkby Stephen do great bacon butties ahead of a ride on the train to Settle.

We could not speak highly enough of Stay Lambing Live: Rachel and Andrew could not have been warmer or more welcoming hosts. The accommodation was spotlessly clean and extremely comfortable. The location is stunning and totally unspoilt with beautiful walking around the cottage. Very child friendly - our six month old baby had a wonderful time and our friends' three year old adored being shown the farm by Andrew. We had several delicious meals in local pubs and loved pottering around the nearby towns. The ten days were the highlight of our summer - thank you, Rachel and Andrew.

A truly fantastic place. A really beautiful farm in an amazing location. The barn conversion has been completed to an excellent standard. Rachel & Andrew are great hosts and get you involved in any part of farm life that you choose. A really relaxing environment. We loved the amazing views from every window of the barn. Can't wait to return.

Andrew

What a truly special place to stay. The cottage was spotlessly clean, warm & cosy with very comfortable beds & sofas. It is the perfect place to relax. The scenery is stunningly beautiful. The welcome basket was full of delicious local produce & was very generous. The owners, Rachel & Andrew were welcoming & extremely generous with their time; our time spent with them on their farm was informative, great fun & the stuff memories are made of. Simply the best place we have ever stayed.

Caroline

We had the must amazing time on the farm. Rachel and her daughter were the kindest hosts and really made us feel welcome. The children loved helping out with the animals - even during the torrential rain! The cottage is beautiful and the welcome hamper of local produce and all the extra touches makes this a very special place indeed! I almost don't want to let the secret out - to keep it for ourselves but that would be unfair after all the hard work they put in!! If you have children or just want a peaceful break in stunning surroundings then you've found it here - you won't be disappointed.

Michelle

Spent a wonderful week at the cottage! Fabulous location in terms of view and accessibility to sights. The Marstons were great hosts; warmly welcoming us and my children and embracing them into their daily farming routine! Definitely going back again!

Marion

Spent a heavenly weekend at the Marston family cottage. Beautiful, tasteful and spotlessly clean accommodation. Great kitchen! Exquisite location! Experienced lambing season first hand - what a treat! Rachel and her family very generously open their working farm up to their guests, including "city mice" with little to no farm experience. I birthed 3 lambs under expert guidance!! Truly a perfect place to ensconce yourself away from the noisy world and a great base from which to explore the wonder of the Dales and Lakes.

Bronwyn

What an amazing barn........right in the middle of the most amazing countryside! Brilliant interior design by Rachel. A large open living space and lovely ensuite bedrooms with big comfy beds. There's loads to do around here as it's right between the Lakes and the Dales, but you could just stay local. Kirby Stephen is a great little place. Well done to the lovely Marston Family, your barn is perfect!

Maureen

Fantastic holiday! A lovely warm welcome, luxury cottage in stunning surroundings. Can't wait to go back again!

Julie

This has rapidly and well deservedly become our favourite family holiday destination with both children aged 7 and 5 repeatedly asking to return. So brilliant we initially stayed in November and returned in February. The welcome from Andrew and Rachael is fantastic. We watched a calf being born, and the children have blown dried calves, and even had 2 new born calves named after them, whose progress they still follow by email. Combine this with a luxurious cottage, and fantastic bike rides, walks and a steam railway on the door and you have a recipe for a contented family! See you again soon!
