The Experience

This smartly refurbished 17th-century coaching inn has an easy-going atmosphere. Off the main street so it’s a stroll to all the town’s attractions including heaps of bookshops, a weekly farmers’ market, restaurants, and antiques.

Nina and James are very hands-on and passionate about provenance – from Herdwick blankets to locally roasted artisan coffee. Nina bakes the breakfast bread and pastries, they do their own smoking and curing and there’s a little kitchen garden at the back. Choose from any kind of breakfast, including vegan, sample inventive cooking by the fire in the cosy bar; the airy restaurant with floor-to-ceiling windows looks out onto the street.

Sedbergh is one of the UK’s three book towns – even the bus shelter has a selection. The Dales Way footpath leaves from your door and you can reach the Howgill Fells in ten minutes; Kendal and Windermere are just under half-an-hour’s drive away.

Reviews

The bar is cosy and welcoming; the restaurant smart but relaxed and the bedrooms and bathrooms are stylish and immaculate. The staff are smiley and helpful. Glorious walks in the Howgill Fells and happy hours in the book shops. A beautiful part of the Yorkshire Dales National Park.

Location

The neighbourhood

Only six miles from the M6 and much more peaceful than the Lake District, the tiny book town of Sedbergh is one of only three in the UK and has an annual festival in October. It remains unspoilt, with a narrow main street of historic buildings and little ginnels with independent shops, a church and numerous bookshops – including 70,000 second-hand books at Westwood Books. You’re a couple of minutes’ walk from an Italian restaurant, Al Forno, and Dalesman Country Inn, as well as James and Nina’s other restaurant, the Three Hares.

Introducing

James Ratcliffe

James and his wife Nina part own The Black Bull with investors. James grew up nearby and Nina, who is Japanese, was born in Germany. They met in Manchester where James studied catering and started The Moocher Man on Manchester's street food scene. They travelled to food and music festivals and also started catering at weddings. After the birth of their son in 2014, they moved to Sedbergh to start The Three Hares, a cafe, bakery and bistro that has won various awards.
