The Experience
The Mount is let as a B&B during school time and a self-catering home during the school holidays. It’s a great place for couples and families, with activities galore nearby and a warm, friendly space to return to. Walk – in your wet suit – to the marina and have a sailing lesson, paddle in a kayak or go for a spin on the water in the Keswick Launch.
Breakfast comes with Clive’s delicious bread, locally cured bacon and conserves produced by a friend who’s a dab hand at jam-setting; your dog will be perky – he gets a sausage too. You can eat outside in the award-winning garden when it’s sunny.
There are five bedrooms to choose from – they all have those wake-up views. If you fancy sleeping out under the stars the shepherd’s hut for one is cosy with a wood-burner, sink and loo (hop back to your private shower in the house). You don’t have to get in the car for dinner – there is a pub in the village and many more in Keswick, a 20-minute walk.

Simply the best! Easily one of the best B&B's in the country. Superb welcome from Caroline and Clive make you feel genuinely at home very quickly. Very comfortable bedroom, breakfast out of this world in their beautiful garden. Everything was perfect. Close enough to stroll into Keswick but far enough away for peace. Top of our list for future breaks.

Location
The neighbourhood
Set in the middle of lakeland village Portinscale, on the doorstep of Derwentwater. The marina is a five-minute walk - a great place for children to learn to sail and Clive sometimes helps out here. Keswick is a 20-minute walk for heaps of outdoor shops and you can have hearty food at The Fellpack cafe, open most of the day. It's a glorious walk Lingholm to see Peter Rabbit’s garden or go for a walk with alpacas.
Local points of interest from Caroline Howarth
- Want to climb one of Britain’s favourite mountains, like Catbells? Dreaming of a beautiful mountain scene all to yourselves? Training for K2 or keen to introduce your 3 year old to the joys of fell walking – we can find the perfect walk right from the door
- If you have not joined the wild swimming craze, The Lakes is the perfect place to try it. Imagine a lake swim in the evening sun. Even a quick dip on a cold day is exhilarating. Take care though: it is an extreme sport – you may be hooked for life! We are!
- What do 6 restaurants in The Lakes with Michelin stars have in common with us? The same local butter! So not only are there amazing restaurants nearby, but The Mount has the very best local produce: the crispest bacon, the zingiest marmalade, and fab art.
- Fancy learning to sail, in a stunning lake with beautiful mountains around you? Want good instructors, nice hot showers and a fantastic café on the lakeshore? Prefer kayaking, paddleboarding or windsurfing? Look no further – that’s all just a 5 minute walk
- What kind of festivals are you into? Jazz, beer, literary, film or mountain? Keswick has them all! As well as world-class theatre and the old cinema. The market is a great place to potter. You'll come away with arty mugs, Cumbrian chilli jam or local slate
- Set in stunning scenery, combining Cumbrian mining and adventure tourism, Honister is an exciting place both for adrenaline junkies as well as young families seeking an unforgettable holiday. Bad weather? A guided tour or climbing in the mine is perfect!

Introducing
Caroline Howarth
Caroline, a social psychologist, and Clive, a chemistry academic, moved to the Lakes in 2016, leaving hectic Brighton/London lives. They’ve lived in many places (Fiji, Kenya, America to name a few...) but the whole family feel at home and inspired by this fantastic area. They love walking, cycling and wild swimming, finding great pubs and delicious local produce, and want to share the magic of the Lake District with you.
I had the pleasure of staying in the shepherds hut at The Mount, which was like a tiny slice of heaven in the Lakes. Clive gave me the warmest of welcomes, offering me tea and cake before the keys! While Caroline was only too happy to share her favourite open water swim spots with me when I asked. The hut was a real delight, stocked with everything from a fab selection of teas, to hot water bottles and extra blankets. I had the use of my own exclusive bathroom in the main house, which was perfect- great shower, a selection of soap and shampoo and big fluffy towels. I can't wait to visit again
