The Experience

From your balcony at the front, watch sporty types play tennis on the lawn. On the back deck, overlooking the brook, you can bask in the sun or catch the flash of a kingfisher.

Fingals is an arty, quirky, atmospheric, secret place, close to the estuary and the coast – Blackpool Sands is eight miles. This two-storey cottage, one of six retreats, has a beautiful, beach-house interior. Come as a couple or as three: there’s a daybed in the sitting room. Enjoy snooker, sauna, and a swim in the lovely light-flooded pool, or walk to Dittisham Sailing School, 30 minutes down the lane.

Set off for the Anchorstone where the seafood is superb; have dinner at the Ferry Boat Inn. Then back to a games room for rainy days, DVDs to borrow, a piano to play, and a romantic night by the wood-burner.

Reviews

The Folly is aptly named; it is an adorable hideaway with a quirky beach hut vibe - albeit a large hut. Cosy with a log burner, yet airy and light with views across the tennis court and gardens, catching the evening sun's rays. Sink onto a boat seat outside and sip a glass of something delicious with your loved one, listening to the soothing sounds of the Brook and you will have found heaven.

Mandy, Sawday's Inspector

Thank you Richard and Sheila. What an idyllic peaceful place in glorious Devon. The Folly was so quirky, cosy, and unique. Andy and I thoroughly enjoyed our stay … so peaceful listening to the babbling brook and the birds, the lovely log burner was so cosy.

Catherine and Andy, Bristol

Thank you for the magical stay! We loved this Home Away From Home - so much to look at in this space in every corner - an absolute delight. A comfy bed, great kitchen and so nice to listen to music while looking out over the tennis court and flowers … we hope to be back someday, Devon is gorgeous!

Megan and Arthur

Perfection yet again!

Nick and Jo

Thank you! Time stands still here - in beauty, comfort and peace. Just us, the stream, birds and all the kids ... next door! How can it be time to go already?? Our hearts are here, no matter where we go and we cannot wait to book a return visit with you Richard & Sheila.

Susan

The Douglas Family

Thank you for creating a fabulous place to switch off ... such a restful place - love the peace and quiet and sounds of birds and stream. We love the Folly!

Giles and Abi, London

Goods times relaxing in the folly, lovely to listen to the stream and sit by the fire. Also feeling very healthy having rotated through the gym, swimming pool and sauna. Thanks for having us! What a fantastic location, just a short walk or drive to interesting nearby towns. We have had a wonderful short break here – thank you.

Sara, Hoath

Another year, another Fingals 'fix' and The Folly, Fingals, Richard, Sheila, Jane and the team remain a highlight and this year was no exception. Thanks so much for the Fingals factor which you know I love so much. A wonderful week that went far too quickly! I will back......

Location

The neighbourhood

Step out of the door and Devon is yours: the Dart, the sea, the woods, and the high-hedged lanes. Hire boats and borrow bikes (note, steep hills!). The Post Office Stores at Dittisham is a 20-minute stroll; 10 minutes beyond is the river Dart, where you can catch the ferry to Dartmouth. Or take the foot-ferry and walk up the hill to Agatha Christie’s house. Sandridge Barton (5 miles) does tours and tastings. Coleton Fishacre, a stunning Arts & Crafts house, is a 40-minute drive.

Local points of interest from Richard & Sheila Johnston

  • You are spoilt for outdoor activities here. Walk Green Lanes from our door, learn to sail on the River Dart just a mile away, take the whole family canoeing from the creek or crabbing on the village pontoon for hours of fun.
  • If you fancy a little sleuthing, jump on the ferry across to Agatha Christie's holiday home at Greenway on the banks of the River Dart. There are mystery trails in the grounds and the house as well as stunning views and excellent cream teas in the cafe.
  • Our favourite beaches require a bit of an effort to reach - private coves with rock pools and absolutely no modern facilities! We'll let you in on their secret locations when you arrive!
  • We have two steam trains locally for both big and little kids to enjoy. Kingswear to Paignton with great views of the Bay or Totnes to Buckfastleigh with Rare Breeds, Otters and Butterflies to see at attractions near the stations.
  • Wonderful cafes, bistros, pubs and restaurants will offer you sumptuous meals in every village or town or even on the beach. Local fish, meat and even veggies are colourful and so yummy - you will be rolling home at the end of your holiday!
  • The weekend market in Totnes is just wild. Full of crazy stalls with hints of your past - aromas of patchouli oil, folk wearing patchwork and with dreadlocks and beads in their hair will serve you organic and home made products to remind you of your stay.

Introducing

Richard & Sheila Johnston

Richard and Sheila have been running Fingals for over 30 years, first as a hotel and now as self-catering properties. It's grown and expanded organically over the years but the easy-going and fuss-free atmosphere is down to their personalities. This is a lifestyle choice for them and they are kind, generous and interesting. They have an environmental policy for recycling and energy.
