The Experience

A hideaway surrounded by moors, woodland and fields. Escape here to switch off your phones, read, write and have long walks in Dartmoor National Park. The setting is magical, secluded and peaceful; sit and admire the views and watch the sun go down from your little terraced garden.

Hugh and Liza are the kindest people. They leave a generous welcome pack of homemade organic bread, milk, eggs and butter – and you can order Liza’s homemade granola. They grow their own veg organically, which you can buy (in season) and the water comes from a spring. The old barn has been converted simply and comfortably into an open-plan space with a Rayburn for winter warmth, practical kitchen area, sofa and king-size bed. Hop downstairs to the bathroom – and a single bunk bed tucked in the corner.

Stock up and spend your whole time here without using the car. Walk up onto Dartmoor – from the top you can sometimes see all the way to the sea. If you do fancy a break from cooking, there are a handful of pubs within five or so miles. Return to marvel at the stars, sleep soundly and then wake to a burst of birdsong.

Reviews

To my mind the eastern edge of Dartmoor is the prettiest with its steeply wooded valleys, tumbling rivers and tors. The setting of the Barn encapsulates all that is magical about this area. Hugh and Liza are kind and gentle hosts whose light touch on the land is rewarded by an abundance of wildlife. To watch the evening sun from the tiny southwest facing garden would be heaven indeed.

Barry, Brighton

The warmth of the welcome and the tranquility of the place were a joy. And a fine base for walks and other excursions in this lovely part of Devon. Thanks.

Rachel, Barcombe, Lewes

The barn was lovely and cosy with everything you need for a stay. Did some great and varied local walks on Dartmoor returning to sit in the sunny garden of the local pub. Hugh and Liza were very welcoming. They couldn't have been more helpful when we had a problem with our car. We can't wait to visit again and do some more Dartmoor walking.

Annette, Schiedam the Netherlands

What a lovely, cosy place to stay! So quiet and secluded with great walks from the doorstep. With the Rayburn running because of the cool weather for the time of year, it was snug and warm. Hugh and Liza were so friendly and helpful without being obtrusive. We felt very welcome and loved Liza's homemade spelt bread, butter, milk and eggs waiting for us on arrival. A brilliant, yet unpretentious place to stay in a stunning location. I'm sure we'll be back!

Sandra, Stratford-upon-Avon

Lovely and peaceful. The perfect place to switch off. Beautiful scenery and good walks. Caring hosts who have thought of everything you could possibly need. Warm, cosy and comfortable. Slept like a baby. Excellent spelt bread.

Location

The neighbourhood

The Barn at Easdon is in a fairly remote spot on the east side of Dartmoor at an altitude of 1,100 feet. It has views across a valley of moorland and fields. There are no shops around the corner; the nearest are five miles away in the small towns of Chagford and Moretonhampstead: deli, butcher, organic cooperative shop as well as supermarkets. Some good pubs are: Ring of Bells Inn North Bovey, three miles; The Horse Moretonhampstead, five; The Rugglestone Inn Widecombe in the Moor, six. The north and south coasts are reachable in about an hour.

Local points of interest from Liza & Hugh Dagnall

  • Good walking and birdwatching from The Barn. Springtime wild flowers and birdsong to delight.
  • Bouldering and rock climbing on Easdon Tor - a 10-minute walk.
  • Local markets featuring artisan food and interesting places to eat. Organic food widely available.

Introducing

Liza & Hugh Dagnall

Hugh and Liza moved to Easdon in 1999. They're both passionate about the preservation of this beautiful area of the National Park. From the very first moment they set foot here they realised how unspoilt it was: clean air, spring water, deep silence. They love sharing this with guests, wanting them to come and escape and step back from urban life.
