The Experience

Tucked in a peaceful hamlet not far from the north Devon coast, this Scandi-chic barn conversion is the perfect bolthole for two (plus a baby or pooch). Stay three nights or more and the next-door owners leave you a generous hamper. They’re on hand too and will happily book restaurants, order supplies and get the wood-burner glowing for your arrival.

Step into an open-plan space framed by beams: at one end a smart kitchen with all the kit, at the other a snug sofa area overlooking your own patch of garden for coffee, sundowners and starlit nights around the fire pit while owls hoot. A generous bedroom and spoiling bathroom complete the picture.

Borrow a torch and walk 15 minutes to the Rock Inn for a pub supper. Explore moors and beaches – National Trust members can park for free at Baggy Point Cliffs and Marine Drive, perfect for blowy walks on Woolacombe Beach. Go horse riding, surfing, cycling, then home for a relaxing massage.

Reviews

I found this a wonderfully calm space in a quiet place – and imagine evenings sitting out under a starry sky, bats flitting, evenings in by the wood-burner, someone else cooking up a storm...

Location

The neighbourhood

Nearby Georgeham (five-minute drive, 15-minute walk) has a few shops, pubs and restaurants. Braunton has a great selection of independent shops including a butcher's, whole food shop and veg shop. The Royal George in Appledore is a delight and it's fun to catch the ferry from Instow if you time it right. Surfers will be in heaven on the north coast, while the coastal path stretches for 90 miles.

Introducing

Sam Humble-Smith

Sam and Ted moved to Devon from London in 2012. They live next door with their son and dog and have loads of great tips to share about the area, from eating out to activities and more. Ted is a talented multidisciplinary artist, you'll see his work on the walls and you can visit his Garden Gallery in the grounds.
