The Experience

Light from the glassed-in south wall fills the sitting/dining room, tall French windows open onto a large terrace with table and barbecue – in summer you’ll be mainly outdoors. Children will love charging about the half acre of lawn with a stream running through it, the climbing frame, apple trees and meadows. A small galley-style kitchen has an espresso machine and you’ll find a hamper with apple juice, scones, sourdough and jam, as well as eggs from the chickens.

Upstairs bedrooms are light and airy with beams, vaulted ceilings and muslin curtains, and bathrooms have Bramley shower lotions; from the comfort of your king-size bed, gaze down the sweep of the valley, cup of tea in hand, and plan the day’s adventures. It’s incredibly quiet down here, like a secret part of Devon, but you’re just a short hop to Kingsbridge or Salcombe for shops, restaurants and to stock up with supplies.

Back home you can jump in the pool, towels and robes provided, or head to the beach with surf boards and crabbing lines – it’s a generous and thoughtful place to stay.

We think you'll love

  • The peaceful Devon valley that feels miles from anywhere, but is actually just up the road from the coast and pretty Kingsbridge
  • Tucking into the brilliant welcome basket: homemade granola, local eggs, proper coffee, apple juice and a classic cream tea (cream then jam – you’re in Devon now)
  • All the thoughtful touches the owners have thought of – like wellies in a choice of sizes

Reviews

Overlooking an old cider orchard, a stay at family-friendly Top Barn is like stepping into a secret rural idyll. Lovely Andrew and Emma have thought of everything needed for a truly relaxing stay. The delicious homemade cream tea to welcome you, the array of buckets, spades and crabbing lines to make the most of local beaches and the stunning indoor pool with amazing views is just pure bliss.

Nick, London

After descending the narrow lane into Top Barn's valley, we felt we'd arrived in a secret place. An aura of peace and calm lies over the property with delightful views down the valley and just a handful of properties nearby. Inside it's cosy and spacious enough for 3-4, with a well-equipped kitchen and a super log-burner: we were there in October and although the weather was kind, what a treat in the evening to spark up the logburner! There is a small but delightful indoor pool, which kids particularly will love. Some lovely local produce greeted us on arrival and the owners were very helpful!

Jennifer, Watford, Herts

Just returned from another stay in Top Barn and it didn't disappoint. It has a quiet charm, lovely green views and calm which was needed. We didn't venture far this time but chose instead to just relax and that is exactly what this wonderful location and rustic accommodation facilitates. We'll be back very soon! Thank you to Emma and Andrew.

Amman, Cambridge

We had the most wonderful stay- beautiful accommodation which was very well equipped. Glorious gardens with children's play area. Fabulous local walks and beaches to visit. Emma and Andrew could not have been more welcoming. Would thoroughly recommend to family and friends. We cannot wait to return!

Mary, London

Top Barn is well renovated and comfortable, with everything we needed, and a good shower. The views are beautiful. So peaceful after London. The supply of beach towels was much appreciated and we had a great day on Bantham Beach.
